Joseph Zamora and the Phantoms face CV in the first round

All games are 7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise indicated

Friday November 13

Paramount (SGV at large) at La Serna (Del Rio #1) at Pioneer

La Serna hasn’t been tested since September. The Lancers might be here. Paramount isn’t bad. The Pirates lost to the top three teams in the San Gabriel Valley League by a total of 14 points. A break here or there and they’re a second place team. The Lancers might be tested but they won’t lose. La Serna advances.

La Serna 24 Paramount 17

Harvard-Westlake (Angelus #2) at Mayfair (Suburban #2)

Harvard-Westlake earned it’s stripes in the tough Angelus League. This is the time that it will pay off. The problem with Mayfair is that it had to play in the same league as La Mirada. The Monsoons can play, make no mistake. This one could come down to a kick at the end. But if the Wolverines can finish 4-1 in the Angelus they can beat Mayfair. Harvard-Westlake close.

Harvard-Westlake 20 Mayfair 17

St. Francis (Angelus #3) at Warren (SGV #1)

One of the rare games where the home team looks like the underdog. St. Francis seems to be jelling at the right time. The Golden Knights have won three straight including a win over previously unbeaten Cathedral. Warren has had a great year. Victories over Downey and Paramount vaulted the Bears to the SGV number one seed. They could be even stronger next year. However this year St. Francis wins. The Golden Knights have a little too much.

St. Francis 28 Warren 24

Norwalk (Suburban #3) at Burroughs (Pacific #1)

This isn’t the Norwalk team of 2013. And this is a different Burroughs team as well. The Indians just finished off a perfect run in the Pacific League and look like they’re ready to make some noise in the playoffs. This year Nor-rock is no match for Burroughs. The Indians will be the ones rocking.

Burroughs 35 Norwalk 13

Crescenta Valley (Pacific #3) at Cathedral (Angelus #1)

Crescenta Valley can still be explosive. The Falcons showed that last week in a comeback win over Arcadia. They can still play with anybody. Problem is Cathedral isn’t just anybody. The Phantoms lost only once all year and the Phantom faithful will tell you that was due to player suspensions. Cathedral is strong at the skill positions and on defense. They also have plenty of depth. Those factors and a home field advantage will be enough for a W.

Cathedral 31 Crescenta Valley 17

Whittier (Del Rio #2) at Downey (SGV #2)

Congratulations to the Cardinals for making the playoffs, but thank you for participating and here’s some nice parting gifts. Downey is at home, the Vikings have talent and are still smarting from the loss to Warren a couple of weeks ago. They will jump out in front won’t let up. Downey rolls.

Downey 38 Whittier 7

Dominguez (SGV #3) at Burbank (Pacific #2) at Glendale

Good match up. Looks like a tossup. Dominguez will run it. Burbank can run it but also can throw it too with Guy Gibbs. The Bulldogs are a team that beat Monrovia (on the field) and Crescenta Valley. They lost to Burroughs (understandable) but also fell to Muir (questionable). Might be a quick game especially with Dominguez keeping it on the ground. Burbank survives with late touchdown.

Burbank 27 Dominguez 21

Santa Fe (Del Rio #3) at La Mirada (Suburban #1)

It can’t happen again can it? Can La Mirada again get stunned in the playoffs after rolling through league?

“These kids are so fired up and excited to play Santa Fe. This is what high school football is all about,” said La Mirada head coach Mike Moschetti.

I don’t think it happens again. The kids are fired up. And most of them don’t care about what happened last year. Running clock in the fourth quarter.

La Mirada 45 Santa Fe 7
