1.) Albert Rodriguez has resigned as HC at South Hills. In four seasons Rodriguez went 21-23 overall and 0-4 in the playoffs. The Huskies were 4-7 in 2015.

2.) St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams fire offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti.

4.) On this date in 1981 Muhammad Ali loses to Trevor Berbick in his 61st and Final fight.

5.) The Los Angeles Angels acquire Yunel Escobar from the Washington Nationals for relief pitcher Trevor Gott and Double-A starter Michael Brady.

6.) On this date in 1975, the California Angels sent center fielder Mickey Rivers and starting pitcher Ed Figueroa to the New York Yankees for Bobby Bonds. The Halos also sent outfielder Morris Nettles and first baseman Jim Spencer for third baseman Bill Melton and pitcher Steve Dunning.

Melton, 30 (Duarte H.S./Citrus College), batted .208 with six homers and 42 RBIs in 1976 and was dealt to the Cleveland Indians the following December.

Bonds, distraught at being traded by the Yankees after leading the team with 32 home runs and 85 RBIs, suffered an injury plagued 1976 but bounced back in 1977 with 37 home runs, 115 RBIs, 41 stolen bases and .342 OBP. He was dealt to the Chicago White Sox in December of 1977 for Brian Downing, Chris Knapp, and Dave Frost.

Dunning pitched in four games for the Angels in 1976. In six-innings of work he gave up nine hits, walked six, and had ERA of 7.50. He was sold to the Montreal Expos in May.

7.) On this date in 2009 Charter Oak defeated Diamond Ranch, 21-0, to win the Southeast championship.

On the same night, La Mirada beat Garden Grove, 49-27, to with the Southern championship.

On this date in 2010, after going 0-10 in CIF championship games, Monrovia used Jay Henderson’s three touchdown performance to beat Whittier Christian, 38-8, for its first CIF title. The game was played at Arcadia High School.

8.) Veteran second baseman Howie Kendrick, 32, remains a free agent. In 117 games for the Dodgers in 2015, Kendrick batted .295 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs with a .336 OBP. He made $9.5-million last season.

9.) Shareef Abdur-Rahim turns 39 today.
