(West Covina) – South Hills opened up San Antonio league play by dominating from the opening tap to the final buzzer in a 64-37 rout of West Covina Wednesday night. The Huskies ruled the boards as well out rebounding the Bulldogs 43-24.

Ify Umodu collected 11 caroms and Cody Doyle added another 8.

Stanley Tran led all scorers with 17 WC points. He sunk a trey and drew a 3 point play in the first quarter to keep the Bulldogs in contention early. Doyle, (10 points), responded by adding six points on a pair of free throws followed by consecutive buckets at the end of a 9-0 spurt for a 21-9 Huskie lead.

Danny Gonzalez drilled one for West Covina off a Brian Fortuna dish from the top of the key but South Hills’ Joe Paul Rodriguez, (12 points, 5 steals, 1 block), delivered a short banker 4 seconds before the first quarter buzzer before besting the horn again before halftime with a high flying tip in, capping another 9-0 Huskie run.

South Hills slowed down considerably in the third quarter, missing 5 of 6 free throws against a 6-0 WC start. John Reed, Arrion Quinn, and Rodriguez each scored later in the quarter to maintain a 20 point Huskie margin.

The Huskies then put it out of West Covina’s reach in the fourth beneath an 11-1 opening run resulting in a 30 point lead.
