(Glendora) – Valley Christian’s Jesse Smith hit fellow teammate Robert Downs on a 27-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give the South a 7-6 win over the North in the first annual All-Star game at Citrus College Friday night.

In game filled with turnovers and miscues neither team could muster much offense. The South had a couple of opportunities early but field goal attempts of 37 and 29 yards both came up short.

The North’s only score came courtesy of the defense. With 4:44 left in the first quarter, Pasadena’s Elijah Quarles popped the quarterback, scooped up the fumble and rumbled 55 yards for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was botched and it came back to bit the North later.

For the South Downs took home offensive MVP honors while Isaiah Araujo (El Rancho) was defensive MVP. Smith was MVP.

Jeremiah Johnson of Pasadena was named offensive MVP for the North. Jack Queen of Pasadena Poly, who had an interception was defensive MVP while Quarles was MVP.

"Torosian does for high school football what Hemingway did for the Spanish Civil War...compelling look beyond the scoreboard and into the lives of players..." "A truly great story unfolds in the pages of Joe Torosian's first novel. With high school football at its core, the story of Dale Andrade shows how a young man grows in all aspects of his life thanks to being a part of a team and a football community." “This is a great read for everyone: from those who love high school football to those who have no idea about the game.” "This book brings you onto the field and into the locker room..."
