6. ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore has been diagnosed with blood cancer.
7. Beholder, California Chrome, and Dortmund all confirmed for this Saturday’s Pacific Classic. Beholder is the reigning champion of the race.

9. On this day in 2002, the MLBPA announces they have set an August 30 strike date. In marathon sessions on the date of the strike, Bud Selig and players come to an agreement on a four year deal to stop strike.
