Game Night: Zero Week

Marcel Perez' Northview Vikings have a big opener against Charter Oak

Marcel Perez’ Northview Vikings have a big opener against Charter Oak

All games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Thursday, August 25

Charter Oak at Northview (Covina District Field)

Northview is a team on the rise. Steven Comstock enters his third year as the Vikings quarterback and wide receiver Antwaun Ayers is back as well. Head Coach Marcel Perez has something special going on at Northview as their schedule shows it with quality opponents like Charter Oak and Pomona. A win over the Chargers, however might be too much to ask. Receiver Brian Casteel, a D1 prospect, is a threat on the outside and Charter Oak as usual is loaded at most other positions as well. Northview will compete, maybe even into the fourth quarter but in the end, the Chargers prevail.

El Monte at Montebello

The Lions have a new coach, a new quarterback and at least for this game some new problems. The Oilers are the Almont League favorites while El Monte may struggle to make the playoffs while trying to get out of the MVL. Montebello may struggle in games later this season but the Oilers will be fine here. Montebello by two-three scores.

tangentdreamsBlues_jpgLos Altos at San Marino

The Titans won’t be as good as last year. Thank you Captain Obvious. Not many teams will be as good as the juggernaut that was San Marino in 2015. Expect Blake Cabot to pick up where Carson Glazier left off behind center and although Glazier, JP Shohfi and the bulk of the Titans have graduated RB/S Michael Chan, maybe San Marino’s best player, is back. Los Altos is trying to bounce back from a disappointing 5-5 season a year ago. Tyler Nevens leads a strong running attack and the word is the Conquerors are once again strong along the lines. Nobody gets blown out in this one. Los Altos, with too much Nevens, has enough in the fourth quarter to win close.

Cal at Schurr

The Condors return Evan Barrajas and Andrew Reyes on the offensive side of the ball and they will be expected to provide the leadership needed to get back to the top of the Del Rio. The Spartans will feature Noah Rangel in the backfield and head coach Dave Ramos is anticipating a big season from the senior running back. Miguel Aguero will call the signals for Schurr behind a young offensive line. The game will be close as both teams will need time to get into a rythm. In the end, the senior laden Condors will come out on top.

South Pasadena at Rosemead

The Tigers are looking to build on 2015 8-3 finish and return Jalen Ross who did a little bit of everything for South Pas. At quarterback Adam Arellano returns after splitting time last year running the show. Rosemead will be breaking in a new signal caller for 2016 and Isaia Ah-Hing is looking like he will be the one. Defense has always been a big part of Panther pride and Carlos Alvarez is the leading returning tackler. It might take a quarter or two for Rosemead to find its identity offensively and South Pas will take advantage.

Chino at Damien

Jesse Ceniceros returns for his second year at the helm of Chino after a 9-4 2015 campaign. Gone is Da’creh West leaving a hole that Andrew Almazan will look to fill. A formidable Cowboy defense will be centered around Adrian Alfaro who looks more than ready. Damien will counter with Warren Bryan and Mikey Mccauley through the air while they look for someone to replace Dylan Thigpen’s 1,855 yards and 18 td’s. In the end Chino rolls.

Monrovia at Burbank

The Jerry Chou era begins. Last season the Bulldogs came to M-Town and blasted the Wildcats on the field. Bank returns Guy Gibbs at quarterback, who played in 11 games and threw 14 touchdowns a year ago. We like Monrovia with its talent advantage and energy of a new staff.

Gladstone at South El Monte

Ted Clarke returns to the sidelines at the Gladiators head coach while Frank Gallardo begins his second full season down at The Swamp. G-Stone will remain a work in progress but the Southmen hope to exploit some openings in the Mission Valley hierarchy this fall. They should handle the Gladiators. If they don’t it could be a long season down on Durfee.

Arroyo at Covina

Under Jim Singiser the Knights are 6-7 all-time in season openers. The Colts are 1-3, on the field, under Joe Brown. Arroyo has good size and talent returning, C-Town has great size but is looking to replace some of the playmakers it lost a year ago.
