Spartan’s Victory A “Schurr” Thing:

Schurr Man Handles El Monte: 44-6

By Rich Whittington

(El Monte)—The Schurr Spartans ran, passed, and tackled their way to an impressive 44-6 victory over the El Monte Lions Friday evening at El Monte High School.

The game saw El Monte draw first blood. Senior quarterback Andrew Ramos dove for a two-yard touchdown; capping an impressive eight-play, 73 yard drive. At this point, El Monte looked like they might be in business. Unfortunately for the Lions, this is where the Spartans took over.

The Spartans first score came on the kickoff immediately following El Monte’s touchdown, as Junior Lance Babb II returned the kick for a 90-yard score to end the first quarter. The point after was good, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Spartans.

The remainder of the game was all Spartans. Schurr added another touchdown in the second quarter, as Senior running back Noah Rangel scored on an 11-yard run. Rangel also converted the 2-point conversion attempt that followed, making the score 15-6 at the end of the break.

Schurr completely dominated the second half, scoring 29 unanswered points, including Rangel’s second score of the evening…a 35-yard run. Senior running back Jose Rochin also contributed to the Schurr ground attack as he found the end zone on a 5-yard touchdown sprint.

The Spartans also enjoyed success through the air. Junior quarterback Miguel Aguero passed for 146 yards, which included touchdown passes to wide receiver Francisco Remigio and Rangel.

The Spartan defense had a fine showing as well, registering two sacks, two interceptions, and a safety.

The Lions next opponent is the Azusa Aztecs. The game is Thursday, 9/8/16, at
Citrus College. The Spartans will host the San Marino Titans on Friday, 9/9/16. Kickoff for both of these contests is scheduled for 7:00PM.
