(South El Monte)–Sal Tovar rushed for four touchdowns, quarterback Daniel Olmos threw two touchdowns, rushed for another, as South El Monte rolled to a 48-21 victory over Bassett on Friday night at The Swamp.

The Eagles jumped to a 14-0 lead and went into halftime with 21-7 advantage.

“Last year Sal started and did a good job,” South El Monte HC, Frank Gallardo said. “This year he’s put on a little weight, got a little taller, so instead of just being a slashing running back he’s got a lot more power to him. Guys come up and he’ll lower the shoulder, he’s doing a great job. The best thing about him is he’s having fun but he’s a competitor.”

The fun continued in the second half for Tovar and company. Olmos converted a 21-yard scoring pass to Richard Nava.

After Bassett responded with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Emmanuel Velazquez to Quinn Peoples…Tovar returned to the party with a 22-yard touchdown run. Four minutes later, Olmos went in from a yard out to make it 41-14.

“We’re beating the teams we should be beating,” Gallardo said when asked about the softness of his schedule. “The boys are getting a lot of confidence in these games. We still got a long way to go, we know that, they know that…and we’re just trying to get better every week. These guys are listening and they believe in what we are trying to do here. They’re absorbing everything we’re teaching them and doing everything I ask them to do.”

Tovar added his fourth touchdown with a short run at the 8:58 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Olympians last hurrah came with 1:27 remaining when Velazquez fired this third touchdown pass, 2-yards, to Chris Cabral.
