Mid Valley Draft Round-by-Round

San Dimas linebacker Christian Morgan was the second overall pick of the 2010 Mid Valley Draft

This was an amazing experiment we will repeat in the future. In the next few days we will tear it apart. Which schools did best? What position was most popular? Underclassmen versus seniors? And who had the best overall draft. To the people watching at home, to those participating, thanks so much. Okay…okay…maybe next year we’ll workout some draft day trades…Perhaps if somebody buys dinner for the commish.

I am surprised no one took Todd Davis higher, but I don’t think too many of you guys got to see him play.

I am also surprised that Bueno didn’t go higher, he is special player.

What I am NOT surprised is that Worthy went #1 overall. He is going to be flat out scary next year! I hear he is already ready getting attention from the Pac 10…impressive.

    Josh,

Honestly Cody Sykes had one game, I mean we needed someone to assert themselves out there especially with Highley at QB and Casey Horine out the rest of the season. I think had he asserted himself a earlier on he would have had 600yd receiving season.

MannsJeff, Lemme ask you one question, would you not want a guy like Sutton on your team? Another one, what do the Titans lack? A DT who can shore up the run like Haynesworth and get into the backfield. What did Sutton do consistently for two years on a varsity level? Just that. Enough said. Thanks for the back up NewRam.
I know I entered the conversation a little late, and even if it had a hint of a homer pick, I’d rather have someone who I know can get the job done, than someone I think might get the job done.
    Now to set it straight.
I think I clearly won the draft. I shored up the needs of the Titans.
    1. Lack of a DT- got that with Sutton
    2. Cornerback issues, and/or slot receiver issue?- A.J. Powell.
    3. Possesion Receiver issue? C. Lazaro, first downs in the air now plus Chris Johnson on the ground, scary good.
    4. Bigger and Tougher MLB than Steven Tulloch? -Vargas is a beast!
    5. Needed a Back up QB? VY gone haywire again, or Collins cant find his walker?- J. Smith, cannon arm, move like VY, and a plus, he has a brain.
    6. Cody Sykes? just a solid guy to have on a team, can be versatile.
So how do I not win this draft, at least I’m top three.
p.s. Joe- Sports writing will always be my passion, I am currently writing a helpfulness piece for my Journalism class… shoot me in the head in comparison to the amazing-ness that is working at the Mid.

Damn, I forgot about the draft and my saints still came out and picked up some heavy hitters, the best linebaker in the Valley Keith Simth, and great fullback Jesse Ili, I got a back up QB and Mike chavez from Arroyo hell yeah and Mike Williams at OL! Damn Saints came up with the W in the Super bowl and came up with a great showing at the mid valley draft. Nick Escoe sorry bud we are going to have to release you due to all the studs we picked up so we can stay under the salary cap…
Arroyo’s playing hart this year, take that mid valley who do you got like that on your schedule b!Tche$

It’s clear the Redskins won the draft. Not only do they get a top flight QB (maybe the best in the draft in Shirley) but they still get a great running back in Geoffrey Vaughns. They shored up the OL with Javier Sanchez (a real butt kicker as Koffler calls him) and the DL with Garrett Clapper. Need a line backer? How about Wardell Crutchfield III, who was on the all Mid Valley team. If you don’t like Vaughns for some reason then Amari Staten will step in. All all positions filled! Go Skins! Also they’re thinking about hiring Steve Bogan as the OC.

Stang Fan- Good call on Duncan. He did fly under the radar.

Duane needed to draft offensive line the first three rds…one reason why every Lions QB fails: that offensive line is horrid.

If we’re going to sign free agents I also want Cody McKenzie another DE from Bonita to reunite with his bash brother Daniel Harriman. Just ask Geoffrey Vaughns and Vincent Hernandez about these two and the hits they deliver.

  15. February 11, 2010 at 2:50 pm | Permalink

Whoa…hold on a minute. That was no homer pick…that was the highest QB left on the MidValley QB Pre-Draft board. I simply went with who the highest QB on that list was.

As for the rest of my draft, I surrounded my team with skill talent that will allow the team to evaluate whether Quinn is truly the QB of the future. Evans gives some great versatility, but he helps instantly on D.

I picked up the Midvalley and Southeast division MVPs as chosen by this fine publication while picking 5th. What more does a team have to do to earn top honors?

    Knight Train / Knight Blind

You Arroyoans may want to review your game one – and note the beat down Sutton, Fei and O’Malley from TC put on your O-line. It was at humiliation level – and lasted all night. Thank God Rivera is a flexible, tough dude…because he was accosted, flattened and chased all night. Another QB would have headed for sideline medical treatment, but not Rivera. Sinsinger himself gave loud praise to Sutton and O’Malley following the game.
Your O-line did not and could not stop TC’s defensive front. Your win came solely because of a defensive secondary that was lost, and lost pretty much all season long..
Sutton may not be #1 in the valley – but deserves no disrespect for the outstanding senior season he had. He raised his game and was in the backfield of every team TC faced last year.

  17. February 11, 2010 at 11:19 am | Permalink

You’re right, normally I would have fixed that for you. In this case I thought I needed to bring you down from your self proclaimed victory. Also, your quartebacks get bashed and battered week after week and you don’t shore up your offensive line with anyone? With that existing offensive line Running will be out of the league within five years due to post-concusion sydrome!

Kevin Smith is solid as a running back and with Lozano now blowing open more holes to run through… I’m thinking top five ground gainers for 2010. And, Chester Taylor is available via free agency!

Oh! So now we’re taking cheap shots huh Bad News?
Worthy’s prep affiliation was just a type-o…the kind in the past you would correct for a brother-in-arms privately…But now with a shot to claim victory in the Draft I’m tossed under the bus…Nice…
You need a running back…I’m not sold on the one you currently have and you didn’t draft one…

However, I will agree with you on homer picks…those guys need to suffer.

  19. February 11, 2010 at 9:49 am | Permalink

Joe, I would have to disagree with you on you winning the draft. My goodness, you can’t even remember where Worthy went to school! Paraclete?

    1) Christian Morgan ( San Dimas) 24 sacks on the year! Enough said!
2.) Javier Lozano (Arroyo) No better lineman in the MVL this year.
3.) Leon Youngblood (Charter Oak) Second to Keith Smith in tackles with 95 but had 11 sacks to lead Chargers.
4.) Andrew Jackson (Santa Fe) Give me a 6′3″ 225 lb WR over a couple of 5′8″ 150 lb guys any day!
5.) Brandon Taylor (Diamond Ranch) How did the 2nd best cover corner in the Miramonte and probable Southeast Division fall this far?
6.) Dakota Behr (South Hills) Hands down the best TE in either the Southeast or Mid Valley for 2009.

I would put these picks up with any others. I would have given an edge to the Seahawks or Browns but both made a couple of homer picks that dropped them a little!

The way I look at it, I won the draft.

1.) Jeff Worthy DT (Paraclete): I got the run stuffer in the middle to take the pressure off my ends. My line will be more active and less passive.

2.) Kevin Running QB (Valley Christian): Big, strong, athletic, talented… I got a first overall pick talent with the first pick in the second round.

3.) Ulises Ochoa RB (Burbank): I acquired the perfect compliment to Stephen Jackson and long term insurance in case anything happens to him. Ochoa can return punts, catch the ball…Oh yeah, and run like a tailback out of the “I”.

4.) Greg Parham CB (Rosemead): I’ve got Bartell at one corner, I needed some help at the other. He’s athletic and he went to Mead so you know he’s physical.

5.) Chris Rodriguez WR (Arroyo): First round talent at a fifth round price. I’m so sick of my current crop of receivers. Fast, but none of them are legit playmakers. I’ve got one in Rodriguez and Donnie Avery is now on the chopping block.

6.) Maurice Dupleasis LB (West Covina): I still need another linebacker. Dupleasis will support Big James in the middle by playing the SAM spot. Coach Spags and I agree we want linebackers who tackle.

Free Agent Signings: Luis Diaz DE (Rosemead), Ronnie Tennell DE (South Hills)

    Interesting stuff here.

I know that not much may be known about the individual players at Muir this past season (aside from Williams), but I do find it interesting that 17 WR were chosen in the mock draft and Ormoni Duncan wasn’t one of them. After all, the kid did make 1st team All-CIF in the SE division, and caught 2 TD passes vs. CO to keep Muir in the game (one on All-World Dennis Rufus w/ 3 seconds to go.) The kid has SERIOUS game.

Keep up the good work MVN!

Yeah but the problem was dawg you were drafting for the Falcons and they don’t need a running back. You already have a good one in Michael Turner and capable second tier guys like Jason Snelling and Jerious Norwood. You took running backs in back to back rounds with Kohler and Canada. Canada didn’t even play last year! I like the kid but you didn’t draft to your needs. How could you take Rufus over guys like Adams- hurd and Chris Rodriguez. You didn’t really need a receiver either. You have Roddy White and Michael Jenkins. Maybe in the later rounds but not in the second! Your draft failed my friend!

I thought it was interesting how people during the year argue for one or a set of particular players and when it comes down to it take someone else. Look at all the Charter Oak and South Hills players taken. Look where the short quarterbacks went. I think the draft showed why some players get scholarschips and others dont.
If your intent Joe T. was to put people on the spot I think it worked. Sign me up for next year. I thought this was just going to be screwing around I think you proved something to us all last night. Interesting.

    Vikings
Round 1: Gus Viramontes, QB (DR). With the uncertainty of Favre coming back, The Vikings needed a Quarterback. Even if Favre does return, we need someone to take over the offense when he leaves.

Round 2: Kevin Attanasio, CB (CAL). Last year when Antoine Winfield went down, it showed we didn’t have much depth in the secondary. Also, when Cedric Griffin went down, it also exposed us.

Round 3: Ellis McCarthy, DT (MON). This seemed like a surprise to all, but with Pat Williams at 38 years old and talking about retiring, we needed a big presence in the middle. As a sophomore he was 1st Team All-Rio Hondo League, 1st Team All-CIF and also an All State Selection.

Round 4: Todd Davis, LB (Clete). This also seemed like a shock. EJ Henderson’s career is most likely over, so we needed a linebacker presence. He has a nose for the ball and is an absolute stud. All league, all cif and also all state. I almost went with Trent Converse from SM but I am happy with my choice with Davis.

Round 5: Lavonte Barnett, TE (Clete). Yet again, another surprising selection. The Vikings were blessed with returning most of their guys, so they had freedom to take young guys. Our starting TE is amazing, but after that, there isn’t much. Going double TE with Barnett in the game would allow us to be more balanced. He can also line up in the slot. Thing with Barnett, he is also a stud Defensive End. Almost went with Haggard since they play the same positions, but Barnett is a bigger threat.

Round 6: Nick Bueno, AP (MON). This kid can do it all. He can run, throw, defend, return, and he even punts! He is just a big play waiting to happen no matter what position he’s at. With team needs already taken care of, why not bring in another playmaker? Looks like we can run the WILDCAT!

I know my picks of Adrian Hernandez (SEM) and Joshua Spence (MVHS) look like homer picks but them on teams like Arroyo, Rosemead, San Dimas, South Hills etc… you would of heard alot more about them i seen them play alot and know they have what it takes… With Spence and Derrick Johnson (Mon) in the middle stoping the run and Golden (CO) on the other side of Champ Bailey it sets our defense…

Then a healthy Reggie Bush type player like Ricky Johnson (WC) being able to give Moreno a rest at RB and catch the ball, then Lagace (AHS) as a number #2 WR to Marshall or as a #1 if Marshall aint there is great Royal, and Stokley will help out too…

Im still trying to get guys like Eddie Landero (WR, El Monte) and De’Shawn Ramirez (KR/RB, Monrovia) as rookie free agents…

As amusing as all of this is, I have a better idea. Hook up Bob Jastrab and Ponciano, mix in Coach Kuk and Lynn Cain and let THEM select the kids they would like. THAT would be a draft.

Honestly…the fans were mad when we let Marty go after 14-2 and then hired Norv Turner. I personally am disgusted with 13-3 and being knocked out of the divisional round, however my boss calls the shots so we extended his contract.

    1. Dalton Williams-the original plan since Adam Muema was dropping was to grab him, however he was picked up. Geoffrey Vaughns although an interesting prospect had fumbling problems, very talented but you have to hold onto the ball. Now to Williams, what is not to like, he’s a big bruiser that has some good quickness as well as speed; very pleased with him especially since LT will be leaving us soon.
    2. Daniel Harriman- we needed help at the DE spot, and he was solid all season for the Bearcats, one of the few things that went well for them was Harry being consistant. You can’t keep a Harriman down as some Bonita fans like to say, his size and skills are great. Why he wasn’t on the draft gurus boards we’ll never know.
    3. Dillon Howes- Yes he’s a big guy, but when Stephen Gregory is your SS you need some help. We think he can step in right away like Eric Weddle did two seasons ago.
4.Leonard Rhodes- right where we planned on taking him, he’s a very big guy at 6′3″. We believe he’ll be a solid player at the fullback position. This will also allow us to move Jacob Hester to become our 3rd RB, because he toted the rock great for LSU, so we think as our third guy there it will solidify that position. Rhodes is a gifted player who can both run, run/pass block, catch. Think about it: Leonard Rhodes punching holes for Dalton Williams!

Let it be known we went to autodraft mode as we’re currently on the East coast.

    5. Josh Wiley-if you say he’s not even the best Linebacker out of South Hills…not my problem, he fits the mold we have chosen…a lot of the other Linebackers available were undersized. He has time to develop as well, so we are definitely not worried.

Now I was aiming for Even Highley- another homer pick…yes but he can go everything and is an excellent leader. His best skills are not what he’s best at though, the Falcons made a great pick and got excellent value.

    6. Ryan Longoria-very good value pick, however with our current receivers he may have trouble surviving camp competition.

We’ll the ATL I’m looking to make & build is well, Leroy Keyes’ish…credit Steve Bogan for comparing Geoff Vaughns to him.

Lowden — will add to his versatility over conditioning in offseason. Outside of his current favorite positions, Can be a derrty bulldozer carrying the rock for the Dirty Birds n begin trucking foos like Taylor Mays in no time.

Rufus — naturally terrific wheels — shall begin shoving people aside splitting the trenches & completing his routes come game time like falling trees. ST Kick rtn and O. Will be in end zone before you type a letter under the lights.

Kohler — Everything you can get in a true workhorse. Competitive and has a passion for the game. Gets into it all the time. TRY TO CATCH HIM.

Canada — well, certain powers didn’t want to give this kid a chance — but we will. Genealogy spells FOOTBALL re: Jesse Canada, younger brother Jamie, etc. TRY TO CATCH HIM TOO.

Highley — Golden foot of punting. Can play QB, tight end, wherever you ask him to he will get the job done. Our staff will prep Highley to sniper grade accuracy and will work with him to boot the ball out at prime spots like the opponents’ 1 yard line from all hashes, left, middle, and right.
