(Montebello) The Montebello Oilers and the Schurr Spartans battled Friday night at Ken Davis Field on the campus of Schurr High School before a standing room only crowd. When the clock stuck zero, the Oilers were left on top of the scoreboard with a 14-7 win.Fans from both sides lined the the chain-link fences finding anyway possible to get a glimpse of the action even lining up two deep on Vail Avenue.
The Spartans got on the board first traveling 65 yards on four plays with Noah Rangel getting the call from 10 yards out. Carlos Ortiz booted through the extra point and with 10:19 left in the first period Schurr led 7-0.
The score remained 7-0 through the rest of the first frame and it wasn’t until :51 left in the first half before the scoreboard saw action again.
The Spartans were on a drive deep into Oiler territory and were set up with second and goal at the Montebello four. Miguel Aguero kept the ball on a read option, was hit hard and coughed up the ball at the four. The Oilers pounced on the ball and after a taunting penalty, had the ball first and ten at their own two.
Gabriel Tapia proceeded to lead Montebello on a nine play 98-yard drive and finished the drive with a three yard run. Kevin Bravo nailed the extra point and with :51 left in the first half, the score was tied.
The Oilers broke the tie early in the third quarter taking the opening drive 65 yards for another score. Tapia busted through the Spartan defense on a 12 yard run. Bravo was good with the extra point and Montebello had their first lead on the night. It was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Tapia finished the night hitting on 12 of 22 for 191 yards passing and 10 carries for 67 yards and two scores rushing.
The Spartans had a chance to try and get even with time running out in the game. After forcing a Brandon Gonzalez fumble, Schurr set up for a potential game winning drive on their own 39 yard line. Three plays later Aguero was hit from behind after scrambling for what would have been a first down and fumbled for the second time in the game. Aguero connected on 16 of 23 passes for 285 yards.
The Oilers with the ball an the Spartans with no time outs, Tapia took a couple of knees to end the game.
Doing battle in the trenches for the Oilers were Steven Salgado, Isaac Cabral, Nathaniel Marshall, Edgar Pelayo and Ramiro Rodriguezz. For the Spartans it was Angel Rodriguez, Mario Cuevas, Luis Guerrero, Jesus Gallegos and Christopher Castorena.
