(Glendora) – Azusa Pacific used a 12-1 run down the stretch to beat Point Loma 81-74 Monday night at Felix Event Center.

The Cougars found themselves down 73-69 with 2:02 remaining after Sterling Somers knocked down a three pointer to cap a 10-0 Point Loma run.

APU then went on a run of its own. Petar Kutlesic hit two free throws and Justin Byrd hit a free throw then scored on a lay up off of a steal for a 74-73 Cougar lead.  Joey Schreiber buried a three and Corey Langerveld knocked down two more free throws and just like that a four point deficit was a six point Azusa Pacific lead with 27 seconds left.

Two more Langerveld free throws 13 seconds later put the game on ice.

Langerveld hit two early threes to get Azusa Pacific off and running to a 15-11 advantage, however Point Loma battled back to tie it at 28 with 7:05 left. The Cougars went on a 10-4 run highlighted by a steal and a jam from Langerveld to go up 38-32 with 4:23 remaining in the half.

Point Loma rallied with a 9-0 run to take a 44-43 lead at the half. Langerveld led Azusa Pacific with 14 and Kutlesic had 10. Vince Boumann was the leader in the scoring column for Point Loma with 13 and Tanner Lancona scored 10 in the first half.

The Cougars used a 7-0 run early in the second half to take a 53-47 advantage four minutes in.

Byrd picked up a steal and a break away lay-up to put the Cougars up 60-50 and APU was still up by six with 7:43 left.

Josh Rodriguez hit a driving lay up off of a steal just before Somers’ three as Point Loma took the lead with ten straight.

The Cougars then responded to get the victory.

Schreiber led all scorers with 23 for Azusa Pacific. Schreiber hit four three pointers on the night and also pulled down 10 rebounds. Langerveld added 18, Kutlesic 15 and Connor Peterson scored 11. For Point Loma Boumann had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Lancona and Rodriguez each had 12 and Somers pitched in 10.

Azusa Pacific improved to 9-10 (4-5 in the PacWest) while Point Loma dropped to 9-7 and 5-4.
