(San Gabriel)- “I’m in it to win it.”

What many speculated became official this morning. Long time San Gabriel assistant and alum Jude Oliva was officially named the Matadors head football coach.

“I got offered the job,” said Oliva. “It’s official, I’m the guy and I’m ecstatic.”

Oliva and his fiancee, Diana, will be getting married this Saturday. “It’s already a great week for me.”

Oliva, who played for Gary Orona when San Gabriel reached the playoffs in 1997, has been the Matadors offensive coordinator since 2006 and coaching in the program since the finals run in 2003.

“I played here, started here, and wanted to be here,” said Oliva, who after a three year varsity career went on to play college football at Dakota State.

He replaces Keith Jones who first took over the SG program in 1999 and led it through last fall.

“Anytime you follow a great coach like Keith Jones its a challenge,” said Oliva. “He changed football here. I’m excited to take what I learned from him he’s been a great mentor.”

(Former Temple City assistant Andrew Cupp served as the team’s HC in 2004—during Jones very brief retirement.)

Oliva is now beginning the search for assistants. In his new role he plans on bringing on an offensive coordinator.

“It’s going to be about doing things the right way,” he said. “With character.”
