Titans Run Through the Gardens, 30-6

Blake Cabot ran for 159 yards and threw for 141 to lead San Marino

By Tim Peterson

(San Marino) – San Marino racked up over 400 yards on the ground and rolled to a 30-6 win over Bell Gardens Friday night on its home field.

Beau Hobbie did the most damage rushing for 261 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries while quarterback Blake Cabot added 159 yards on the ground. Cabot also threw a 71-yard touchdown pass and had 141 yards through the air overall.

Hobbie, the grandson of head coach Mike Hobbie, scored the first touchdown of the night on a two-yard run to cap a 50-yard drive on the Titans first possession. This came after a bad snap by Bell Gardens out of the back of the end zone on its first series for a safety gave San Marino a 2-0 lead.

Bell Gardens lone highlight of the night came late in the first quarter. Augustin Velasquez Jr. found Gabriel Campos Jr. behind the San Marino secondary for 78-yard touchdown pass. Campos caught the ball in stride and took it to the house. Unfortunately for the Lancer faithful it was all San Marino from then on.

The Titans, who totaled 426 yards on the ground overall, scored the next three touchdowns to close it out.

In the second quarter Hobbie again ran two yards for the score to finish a 62-yard march. San Marino struck quick on its next possession. On the first play of the series. Cabot connected with Jacob Leftwich who found some daylight and and raced 71 yards for the score.

San Marino could have had one more but the Titans fumbled the ball at the Bell Gardens two-yard line. They settled for a 23-6 halftime lead.

They pushed across one more late in the third quarter when Hobbie, who else? sprinted in from a yard out.

The Lancers were unable find any momentum against the San Marino defense. They punted three times in the second half and were stopped once on fourth down at the Titan 21. Bell Gardens was forced to punt seven times overall.

Velasquez finished with 170 yards passing with the one big play going to Campos.

San Marino improved to 4-1 overall while BG dropped to 1-3. The Titans open Rio Hondo League play October 6 against La Canada.

    Anon,
It was Coach Beltran’s 4th year as head coach when they lost to Bonita in the Semis. Turning a program around in 4 years is damn good! That’s what is expected. This is year two at BG and from what the parents are saying on this blog he’s well on his way to changing that culture as well.

Beltran won that Cif Championship in 2013. He must be like 60 years old, so Ramos still has about 10+ years to win one then you can compare coaches lol. Up until 2010 when LS lost to Bonita in the semis Beltran was who ? Just the HC at LS trying to turn things around. His teams were not good until late in his coaching career. LS was a doormat in the Del rio for the longest. Not the case now, they are highly competitive.

I didn’t know I was bashing a kid or a coach. Sorry for the typo. Why would you want the game to go to the last play? I honestly hope schurr beats them by 50 and let the JV play the rest of the game. It’s football…we play to win. If they had a chance to score big on Schurr believe me they will. That’s a coaches mentality. Should we also show our young men to help their opponent up off the ground?

    Second Time,

Carroll never coached the Bills, he was head coach of the Jets and Patriots prior to USC and the Seahawks. This is what is wrong with more than half of the people that come on here…know your damn facts. I don’t care if you are a Schurr parent or BG parent, you are on here talking crap about high school kids and the men who VOLUNTEER their time in helping shape our young men! I hope the game between BG and Schurr is good, hell I hope it is close and comes down to the last play! That what it should be…great games and memories that is why these young men play the game. Very few make the jump to college! I wish both Schurr and BG a healthy and good rest of the season!

Not fooled just that CIF ring he and his staff have proves how good they are. La Serena was a doormat of a program before they we there. Ramos oh wait he has no rings one semifinal appearance in all his years at BG. Beltran will be more successful in a shorter time trust me lots of good things happening in BG.

Wasn’t Pete Carroll the worst coach when he coached the Bills? I would say he is a proven coach now with the Seahawks. Get off Ramos back. You sound a little bitter.

To all Shurr fans yes you have a very talented team no one is denying that. But the game won’t be the same as last year it will be much much closer. The one thing you have against you in every game is your head coach trust me when I say he will choke always has and always will. BG isn’t just going to tool over they young men will come to play Beltran is making changes and it’s all looking good. Enjoy this year because after this year you don’t have nothing. Anything less than CIF is a failure with the team you guys have and like I saI’d with the head coach you have that CIF ring will elude you.

Because all those teams beat BG please don’t say they would beat Schurr as well. In no way do you have the players to compete. Schurr will let you know come time to play BG! You would be 0-5 against our preseason. Even on a bad year BG wouldn’t beat West CO. The Lancers come to the hill this year

@ Anonymous lol at Garfields, St.Pauls, record, Yes you played Arroyo and Whittier is ok. San Marino Norwalk and El Rancho, and Rancho Mirage will beat you. So yes we have a the more difficult preseason. And yes when we both meet it going to be a shootout. Should of lost to Whitter but it’s better to be lucky than good.

    Anonymous,

With the rosters Schurr and Montebello have (Senior Heavy) they should be tops in the Almont, hell both SHOULD be playing for a CIF Championship in their respected Divisions. That being said, don’t be surprised when BG travels up to Schurr and gives them a game. Schurr is a very athletic team that has a good coaching staff! From the program I have and checked BG has 7 underclassmen starting on offense and 6 underclassmen starting on defense. That’s not an excuse, they have played their butts off and have made every game competitive (except for the San Marino game). Don’t overlook this young team and look out for the next two years!

@Anon: Boy are you wrong about BG fans. We could not be prouder of the way the team has fought through the pre-season. There has not been one word of smack against Beltran accept maybe a La Serna fan here and there. BG will be competitive every game in the Almont and that is great for Beltran’s year 2.

I know, I know. Woulda, Coulda, Shouda!
Ive seen 3 of 4 BG games this year. BG looks way better than last year.
We were up on El Rancho and Norwalk through the first halves. Fell apart in the 3rd qtr both games.
Our defense did well the second half against San Marino.
There are a lot of positives here.
Its just a matter of time.
We will be fine in league.

@Anonymous no one jumping ship still here going to ride this till the wheels fall off. We believe in Beltran and his staff. No one in the Almont had a preseason as tuff as us. We will make noise in league this year just wait and see.

    Anonymous,
We are still here and we are still very supportive. San Marino is a tough opponent, they are not 4-1 for no reason. I believe they played for a state championship two or three years ago. Why play Cantwell, LA Wilson, South Pasadena, Temple City, Walnut, La Puente, Gladstone, and Bassett and earn nothing. San Marino beats Montebello, Schurr, and everyone else in the Almont. You play the tough preseason to get you ready for league and the playoffs. I believe Coach Beltran did the same thing at La Serna and it was pretty successful for him there. We as parents know and understand there is a plan, come see a game anonymous and maybe you will see as well.
    BG Schedule:
    1. El Rancho – Lost in the Quarter Finals last year
    2. Norwalk – Currently 4-1 and lost in the First Round last year
    3. Azusa – Lost in the Quarter Finals last year
    4. San Marino – Currently 4-1 and lost in the First Round last year
    5. Rancho Mirage – Currently 3-1 and lost in the CIF Championship to Arroyo last year by 1 point.
Toughest preseason in the Almont League. No one comes close. BG goes 1-4 or 2-3 its a positive. There have been several playoff runs and league championships won by teams that took there poundings in preseason.
