Chargers Start Slow, Finish Strong to Knock Off Huskies

The Charter Oak defense locked up RJ Stearns and the Huskies.

(Covina) The Charger Oak Chargers trailed 13-7 after one quarter of play but that was the only time as their defense only allowed one more touchdown in route to a 37-14 victory Friday night over the South Hills Huskies on the campus of Charter Oak High School.

Jermaine Braddock got things started for the Chargers fielding a punt at his own 40 and raced 60 yards to paydirt with 7:08 left in the first quarter.

South Hills came back to tie the score with 3:37 left in the opening period on a six yard run by Ryan Torres. The score was set up by a blocked put recovered by Justin Maag. The blocked punt came over a bad snap flew over the head of punter Gabriel Trujillo who made an effort to get the punt away.

As time was running out in the first, the Chargers pushed their lead to 13-7 when Jalen Palacios found Michael Anyanwu on a post route for six from 28 yards out.

Early in the second quarter took their last lead of the night on a 33 yard pass from RJ Stearns to AJ Cruces. Ramiro Hernandez booted through the extra point for a 14-13 lead.

Charter Oak regained the lead with 3:32 left in the first half when the Charger defense got a hold of Stearns in the endzone. Stearns tried to throw the ball away but no one was in the area and was flagged for intentional grounding. Since the foul occurred in the endzone the safety was awarded to the Chargers.

The Chargers longest sustained drive came as time was running out in the first half. A seven play 72 yard drive was capped by a another touchdown pass from Palacios to Anyanwu this time from 24 yards away.

The rest of the game belonged to the Chargers who score two more times, one in the third quarter and one more time in the fourth. Isaiah Hamilton picked off a Stearns pass and raced 56 yards to glory and the final score came on another pick six by Brandon Guzman.

Charter Oak will open up league play next week on the road at Diamond Ranch while South Hills will be at Covina District Field hosting Mira Costa.
