Mid Valley Writers Top 20

Only two of the top 20 teams lost but they were big ones. Northview fell to San Dimas and San Marino lost to Monrovia in two games that will go down as classics. Everything else was status quo as the teams get ready for the playoffs.

1. Sierra Canyon (8-1)  – Trailblazers get Paraclete Friday in an all out brawl.

2. Cathedral (8-1) – Phantoms travel to St. Francis for Angelus crown.

3. Charter Oak (9-0) – When do playoffs start?

4. St. Francis (9-0) – Golden Knights drop 77 on Harvard-Westlake.

5. South Hills (7-1) – Huskies demolish Diamond Bar.

6. Arroyo (10-0) – Perfect regular season in the books.

7. Downey (7-2) – Vikings beat Warren handily in rivalry.

8. Mayfair (8-1) – Monsoons memorable run continues with rout of Bellflower.

9. Burbank (7-2) – Bulldogs outlast Muir; perfect in Pacific.

10. Crescenta Valley (8-1) – Falcons close out at Arcadia this week.

11. Glendora (6-3) – Tartans will be a tough out in post season.

12. Schurr (8-1) – Spartans hitting their stride.

13. Los Altos (7-2) – Can Conqs beat DR?

14. San Dimas (6-3) – Saints Ware out Northview.

15. Northview (6-3) – Steven Comstock’s last game vs. San Dimas is memorable.

16. Covina (7-2) – Colts can still make noise in playoffs.

17. South El Monte (8-1) – Eagles win the Griffin Bowl.

18. Diamond Ranch (6-3) – DR to battle Los Altos for second place in Hacienda.

Knight…..Arroyo and SEM is a rivalry game, all records are out the door during that type of game. too many emotions run high and thats why you cant judge a team by stats going into a rivalry week. On paper you all should of smashed on SEM…right? Just like on paper we should of crushed MTBL, but all records and stats go out the door during your rivalry week. So why did SEM do so well against you and almost lost to Rosemead?
Schurr would love to meet SEM in the playoffs. Good luck to all in the playoffs.

I agree with you for the most part. Schurr has more athletes than SEM for sure. I think SEM is tougher in the trenches IMO. Tovar is one of the best around no doubt. I do think you’re right when you bring up familiarity, SEM knows us better than most teams do. Kudos to them for scouting which hasn’t always been the case. SEM tried ball control to keep our offense off the field and the defense is absolutely no joke! They can fly to the football and boy can they hit. Schurr fell into our hands playing fast and big play offense which is what we love and when we’re at our best. style makes fights in boxing, well same is true in football.
Also don’t forget Rancho Christian the team that knocked SEM out last year is back and seemingly ready to repeat.

Lol… I sincerely hope they aren’t they same team now compared to when they played us. I’d like to think Schurr is led by a quality coach and quality coaches get their teams Better as the season goes. Arroyo also isn’t the same team you played… Were better and SEM still gave us all we wanted.
I do feel you guys are on a collision course and I agree both of your teams have a great shot. My point was and is… it isn’t a lock. But here what I’ll say, Schurr is a school of over 3,000 kids… you better win it all or it’s a Choke job. Conversely a school like SEM is 1300-1400 roughly half of your student population…so on paper, it should be a blowout. Schurr, it’s now or never boys!

MVL teams don’t get the respect they deserve. It’s a black and blue league where even lopsided wins are physical affairs. Either MTVIEW,EM or Rosemead are third place teams in the Almont.

SEM, I like Tovar… he can make or break games … but unless SEM gets schurr early… they won’t be able to compete. Now I know you guys barely squeaked SEM and smashed schurr … but hasn’t SEM been inconsistent lately, they can’t play down to competition… and with there offense style , you can’t fsll behind too much… the clock is your enemy. It should be a good game … I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the final….

If that’s the D12 final… I’ll cheer for frank and SEM…bc i don’t like the smoke and mirrors comeong frlm schurr… but i don’t think they can match up talent wise … I’ll be honest … if SEM had the talent Schurr has THIS year ( bc we know this is the Cinderella year) SEM would be your league champs lol .. remember SEM kept it close with Arroyo bc they know Arroyo … no scouting no history involved… Arroyo beats SEM by 3tds easy …. Tovar can only do so much … and i believe he’s the best player in our area … him and Maldonado from Amat … two talents that don’t come around often .

Mt View, Marshall, and Gab are basically bye weeks. El Monte and Rosemead are not great teams. If they want to be respected by the big dogs they should dump Rowland and pick up a big dog.
But, that’s wasn’t my point. The Get Back Coach on this thread believes Arroyo is a top team in this area. I’m trying to say they are a good team but simply cannot compete with the big dogs. Maybe for one game in a season but they would be dismantled if they took on the schedule of a CO or SH or Glendora.

Well Grim, I think that on Oct. 26, 2017 that Calpreps main logic board overheated and made Monrovia a 17pt. underdog and even gave TC a 2-3 pt. advantage over the Cats. But now that it’s fixed it left fans scrambling for cover. Even TP from the Mid bought stock. Let’s see what he say’s this week in his predictions for TC/Monrovia game outcome. Cal Preps just reversed the point spread in favor of the Cats. My prediction is that Monrovia will NOT have a hangover this week and come out on fire. I used to love watching the Monrovia/TC nail biters back in the day. Now that I don’t have anymore nails my hair is beginning to slowly disappear. Cat’s by 21……

For SM and Monrovia the real Trick or Treat that could result in a Nightmare on Huntington/Colorado St would be if TC beats Monrovia in some TC plays its best game and Monrovia has a hangover game.

That would be a Freddy Krueger 3 way tie for two playoff slots. A three way coin flip could exclude any of the three teams

The only standings that matter are the final standings:

The rest is just fallible human beings predicting the outcome when other fallible human beings play games that are subject to all sorts of unexpected uncontrollable factors.

Every so called expert thought San Marino would beat Monrovia. Me too but with the disclaimer that Monrovia would have to score over 40 points to have a chance. And they did, 42 points. But even that would not have been enough if multiple scores had not been called back on penalties at the end of the game.

But in the end Monrovia won, scoreboards dont lie and complaining about refs is for losers.

So when some team is one the top 20 or not on the top 20 or is low or high in your opinion, it is all good for old guys in lazy boys to argue about… But the final standings and the scoreboards dont lie.

Okay Arroyo can’t help what league they’re in and how good those teams are, but they happen to have a pretty good team in SEM which they beat. So Arroyo has 4 preseason games to really show their worth TC (playoff team) Covina (top 10 d11 team) and Schurr (top 5 d12 team) and Rowland (horrible).

TC is not coming off the schedule and Covina and Schurr are good solid games for them it’s like they’re Cathedral d3 facing them they’re d11 themselves. So take off Rowland and put Los Altos or Monrovia and you ppl will be happy? That’s probably still a 10-0 season.

I will agree in with most in terms of Monrovia’s preseason, I never felt that they played on a scale worth noting. As for San Marino, they have been very consistent throughout this season and I look at them as a good measuring stick in determining how good some of the MVL schools are. Monrovia’s inconsistency’s have haunted their whole season thus far. Early season Injuries, lack of decision making by coaches and players etc… but as they have grown through most of those growing pains, they are right where they could have been all seasons in terms of team strengths. I am not taking anything away from the rankings it’s just that as the year comes to an end you really find out what teams are made of. Monrovia will have a second chance hopefully in the playoffs to prove they are the real deal.

Yes, Arroyo has seven cupcakes on their schedule. Yes, they are ranked ahead of several teams who would beat them. But, come on people, these are just rankings, and Arroyo is a defending Division 12 Champion who is currently undefeated (10-0). No need to continue to state the obvious, unless of course the Arroyo faithful comes on and continues to declare themselves masters of the universe. Let’s keep in mind that they did face 3 opponents who are good enough to beat them and failed to do so. Covina, Schurr, and South El Monte were worthy opponents for Arroyo, and Arroyo beat all three.

    @Observancat

Not so fast my friend. Apparently, you are not as “observant” as you think. Although I don’t disagree with the notion that San Marino and/or Monrovia would finish 1st in the Mission Valley League, you cannot make that bold conclusion without having fallacies in your assertion. Mmmm, let’s take a look, shall we. According to the records, Whittier easily defeated Monrovia, did they not? One week later, Schurr defeated Whittier. And if I recall correctly, Arroyo outclassed Schurr. Chew on that prior to emerging as the self-proclaimed Mission Valley League Champion.

@Observantcat, I can see your point but the way you present it is fallible. According to your theory, since the Cowboys beat the Giants and the Giants beat the Broncos than the Cowboys would beat the Broncos? Go check out the Cowboys vs Broncos score earlier this year and see if it happened that way. I don’t think Arroyo can beat Downey, Mayfield, Burbank, CV, Glendora, Los Altos, and San Marino. I think it would be a toss up versus Monrovia, you guys have the better athletes but Arroyo have the better staff. If we rank solely by who has a better team, Monrovia would be in the top 5 for sure. But as we all know, having the best athletes seldom win. Just ask the Patriots, they are one of the least athletic team in the NFL with the most nonathletic QB. Arroyo’s weakness on offense is their run game.

No need to get flustered. Arroyo is a top 20 team but not a top dog, like you seem to think. They are undefeated because of a cake schedule. Even with a great one like Glendora or CO they would still be respected but maybe one game over .500. Like I told you before, don’t take away from what Arroyo has done by being arrogant. Not to throw gasoline on the fire but there are many teams up on this list that are by far not as great as their record may indicate. Taking a good look at their body of work in league as well as in their preseason these teams would not make the playoffs in other like leagues. Monrovia or San Marino would be 1st, or second in the Mission Valley league leaving Arroyo and South El Monte without a chance to participate in the Playoffs if you are truly comparing teams by their talent levels. Arroyo struggled with league Fo El Monte only being up 13-0 at the half and eventually won the game by the score of 33-0 whereas San Marino scored 40 pt. in the first half and wound up with a running clock the entire 2nd half the score was 47-0 I have a good feeling Monrovia would have done pretty much the same or worse. South El Monte pretty much the same as Arroyo, only scathing through league with teams that have very little defense and minimal offensive abilities. But for what it’s worth may the rankings fall where they may. I’m not saying to push Monrovia up for it’s record being what it may, but for goodness sake, San Marino would win the Mission Valley league hands down by at least 21 plus points on every team in that league.
