What’s interesting about this schedule is that it involves three schools who have had to change their mascots because of the state’s tribal ruling. Fullerton has become the Red Hawks, Canyon has become the Cobras, and Santa Fe is now the Sentinels.
Fullerton tried to obtain the “written permission” needed from one of the tribes to continue with the name ‘Indians’ but was rebuked, meaning this name, which was actually coined in error by Christopher Columbus, is deemed the most hurtful. Fullerton has been using this moniker for 103 years, long enough for the offended party to lodge a complaint, so the state’s action in this matter is a publicity stunt, telling everyone how thoughtful our politicians are, as they continue to tax and regulate us into oblivion.
