Spartans sweep Minutemen in Doubleheader

(La Canada) – A week off didn’t cool the bats of La Canada as they swept a doubleheader against Maranatha 4-0 and 10-2.

Spartan’s junior pitcher Lauren O’Leary struck-out 16 batters in the first game and junior shortstop Anna Edwards went two for four with a home run and three RBI’s enroute to the 4-0 victory.

In the second game, La Canada was led by Aubri Thompson who went four-for-four and had an RBI.  Edwards also knocked the ball around the yard with a three-for-five performance and had another 4 RBI’s.

The Spartans were down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, when they finally got to Minutemen pitcher Leah Heefner for seven runs.

The inning started innocently enough as Edwards singled and hot-hitting Catherin Horner doubled off the top of the left-field wall.  Starting pitcher Megan Martin sacrificed Edwards home to tie the score at one.

After Selina Mohr walked, Maren Owen singled to score Horner to give the Spartans the lead.  Thompson, Jessica Ogden, Kayla McCue all got into the hit parade as La Canada sent 13 batters to the plate to take a 7-1 lead after three innings.

The following inning didn’t fare to well for Maranatha pitching as they gave up another three runs after sending nine batters in the inning.  The big hit came from Edwards who singled to score Thompson and Ogden.

Minutemen shortstop Annie Sommers would score in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to eight to close out the scoring.
