Heggins Steps Down at Duarte

James Heggins steps down as the HC at Duarte after two years.

By Tim Peterson
(Duarte) – James Heggins confirmed Tuesday that he has stepped down as the head coach at Duarte after two years.

The Falcons went 8-13 overall under Heggins. Duarte won the Montview League title in 2016 and went 7-4 overall before falling to Laguna Beach 26-21 in the first round of the CIF Division 13 playoffs. Last year the Falcons dropped to 1-9 and 0-5 in league.

As has been the case in several recent coaching changes, budget constraints played a big part in Heggins’ decision.
“The Dean of Athletics position that I was in was cut due to budget issues. That would no longer have me working on campus,” Heggins said.

Duarte will begin the search or a new head coach immediately.

IN THE LAND OF THE BLIND THE ONE EYED MAN IS KING.

IT IS WISE TO KEEP POLITICS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS IF YOU WANT TO TALK POLITICS YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SITE, DON’T BE SO FRUSTRATED IN YOUR LIFE.

BUDGETS ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO WINNING, IF YOU ACTUALLY TALK RESULTS AS THIS GAME IS BUILT UPON THE COACHES WHO GO 1-9 DO NOT DESERVE TO CONTINUE ON A SERIOUS SALARY. THE MENTAL MIDGET WHO ORIGINALLY SET UP THIS DEAL SHOULD ALSO BE SENT PACKING.

UNTIL HIRING IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO RESULTS ONCE AGAIN AND ADMINISTRATORS ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE COACHES BEING HIRED FOOTBALL IN THE VALLEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE IN A DECLINE.

IN THE REAL WORLD IF PEOPLE ARE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DECISIONS THEY MAKE THEY WILL ALWAYS CHANGE THEIR HABITS.

NEXT PERSON WHO TALKS POLITICS ON THIS SITE MUST SLAP THEMSELVES SILLY IN A MIRROR AND STAY OFF THE SITE FOR 31 DAYS.

We may not have money in the budget to pay teachers what they are truly worth but at least we will have safer highways to travel on in the next 5 to 10 years..

By law Heggins would have known in March that his position was cut. He waits until now to make the decision not to coach leaving the program in worse shape than when he found it. Claims to “love the kids” in a different article I read. Ya, it sounds like it!

If we can’t pay coaches and teachers now wait until a recession hits. Some school misspend money and pay the price with bad programs and student leaving for a better situation.

Plenty of conservatives feel the same as liberals about our president. Don’t believe the fake news updates from twitter telling you otherwise. Beyond that, lets keep the discussion to HS sports

Wow, another all time low for liberals. Heggins is out of the job because of Trump? You must have been one of Salcido’s students over at El Rancho!

Spitting facts! The bail outs of the banks only delayed the inevitable. The economy is gonna bust there’s no way around it.

If you think the budget cuts are severe now, wait ’till our phony economy hits the skids. I can imagine schools firing half their teachers, making each day a minimum day, eliminating most sports, school meals and bus services. All this stuff would have happened already had it not been for the central banks’ seizure of 25% of the nation’s housing stock, which kept property values (and property TAXES) high enough to support the public education racket.
What this coach is going through represents a preview of coming attractions.

I’m not going to pretend like I know what’s happening here but it sounds like this conversation might have happened a couple years ago.

Admin: Hey coach Heggins. We really want you to be the head coach.

Heggins: I can’t. I’m busy at Mt. Sac

Admin: You can do both! We’ll let you.

Heggin: Okay but what else will you do for me.

Admin: We’ll make you athletic director too!

Heggins: No way. Those guys get paid nothing for their hours. That’s just as bad as coaching. So I have to do double the work and get paid even less.

Admin: Ok Ok Ok. You’re the guy we want so we’ll create a new admin position and call it Dean of Athletics. You’ll get admin salary, won’t have to teach, can coach here And at Mt. SAC? How does that work?

    Heggins: Deal

    2 years later.

Admin: Coach. We need to talk.

Heggins: If you cut my position, I’m out.

Sounds to me that the Duarte district bit off more than it could chew and that Heggins didn’t reciprocate the school helping him out with a cush job. He must want to look into being an administrator.

It’s very understandable on both sides. Coaches need to be paid more. But coaches also have to realize they’re not in Texas and can’t hold it against their districts when they can’t show them the money.

Now this sounds like a job for Jude! If he can turn Duarte around then he’ll deserve all the hype and praise he gets. Let’s see if he can steal or “recruit” players from the surrounding schools
