Apaches in Drivers Seat with 3-1 win over CV

Garrett Tuck fanned 7 in six innings to pick up the W

(Arcadia) – Jonathan Larson continued his surge at the plate by getting his ninth multiple hit game in the last eleven and going 3 for 4 as Arcadia beat Crescenta Valley 3-1 in a Pacific League battle.

His third hit was the decisive blow- a two out, two run triple to left center in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-0 Arcadia lead. The Apaches then held on as CV rallied to load the bases with no outs to begin the seventh.

Starting pitcher Garrett Tuck was done no favors that final inning as his 2-1 pitch to leadoff batter Kyle Pomeroy was misplayed at third base and thus sailed through to left field, only to be fumbled again there for a three base double error. The runner held on third despite being followed by opportunities of a wild pitch third strike and a pop-drop single to shallow right that necessitated an arm change.

Apache head coach Nick Lemas brought in K.J. Edson to close it out, and after fanning one and giving up an unearned run, Edson caught power hitter Joe Sedano swinging on a 2-2 serve. He then induced cleanup batter Troy Mulcahey into an easy comebacker and flip to first to conclude the game and earn the save.

Tuck went 1 for 3 at the plate including an RBI sacrifice fly to center for the Apaches’ first run. On the hill, he worked a six inning, 95 pitch one walk four hitter while striking out 7. After issuing a one out double to Pomeroy in the second, he left the Falcons offense at a standstill by retiring 12 of the next 13 batters. His record improved to 4-2.

Crescenta Valley’s Mulcahey fell to 2-2 with the loss as he gave up eight hits over six innings. He used 127 pitches and fanned 13.

Arcadia left a runner on third in each of the last five innings. CV dropped into third in league, (3-2), a 1/2 game ahead of Burbank (3-2) which it defeated 6-4 before spring break.

The Apaches took sole possession of first place in the Pacific at a perfect 5-0, a game ahead of 4-1 Pasadena. They will travel to Burbank on Tuesday. A win there, coupled with a Pasadena victory over Crescenta Valley the same day, could set up another classic under the lights at Giambrone Field Friday night.
