Just when he thought he was out…they drag him back in!

San Marino confirmed the weeks long speculation this afternoon, that Mike Mooney will return has the Titans head football coach replacing D.R. Moreland who resigned in March.

“It’s official, I’m back,” said Mooney who spent the first two seasons of his head coaching career leading San Marino in both 1997 and 1998.

The former Temple City HC (1999-2006) becomes the tenth HC in Titan history. Mooney, 12-9 in his first go around, joins Bill Maloney as the second former HC to leave and return to head the program.

“I’m looking forward to coaching a fine group of young men, and working with a great group of people,” said Mooney. “Well get started in traditional fashion. Got to meet with parents and sew up a few staff positions.”

Mooney confirmed former TC assistant Marty Valdez will be the defensive coordinator and Tim Loya, after a one year retirement, will join the staff. As will another former Temple City coach, Mike Cable, who has agreed to become the new Titan defensive backs coach.

The return of Mooney is eighth coaching change within the Rio Hondo since the end of the 2006 season. (Mike Mooney, Steve Garrison, Rich Wheeler, Tip Sanders, Randy Backus, Anthony White, D.R. Moreland). Only South Pasadena’s Ed Smith remains in place from the 2006 season.

Responding to his first grilling question as to why he was so late giving The Mid the news: “It wasn’t for a lack of trying, maybe you guys should cut back on the extended lunch hours over there. It wouldn’t hurt.”
