    @Del Rio Alumn

Some teams are in tougher division than they were previously, making it harder for DRL teams.to make deep runs Private schools only make it worse when they have poached local talent and take away some program potential.

ever see teams that are real good summer teams and very average in tackle football? Yes defensive coverage fundamentals and theory are huge part of quality teams, as is an efficient passing game. But I still believe in blocking and tackling; therefor more hours need to be spent building body; bigger , faster , and stronger

La Serna and Santa Fe, logically, are numbers one and two in league; non-league does not mean much record wise, other than maybe a third place team with best record (or fourth place) may get better draw.??? Is Santa going to be ‘consistently BACK?’ La Serna class over many seasons. Other 4…well zero have performed well enough to suggest battle for league, unless the ER coach (2nd season) is a real good coach; good enough to motivate ‘belief’ again=which has been lost since departure of Lopez. Other 3 blah

How fast this league has fallen, Santa Fe and La Serna can’t get out of the First Round. El Rancho went 1-4 (the last couple coaches that did that at El Rancho were fired but this one gets promoted to AD…go figure). Cal can’t sniff the playoffs and Whittier continues to under achieve. A few years ago this league had La Serna in the Semis, El Rancho in the Quarters…oh how it has fallen.

    DRL PLACES 1-5

2015: LS, WHS, SFHS, PHS, ER, CAL
2016: LS, SFHS, ER, WHS, CAL, PHS
2017: SFHS, LS, WHS, CAL, ER, PHS

Looks like only 3 consistent programs to me.

Every year is different. Predictions don’t mean ish and we can all speculate as much as we want – but this year the Del Rio is up for grabs.

The season was lost during that cal game, went from a potential DRL champ to a 3-7 team because they were able to complete passes over our short DB’s… I still say LS runs away with the DRL. They don’t have the Palmer type QB but the system just works.

Didn’t Santa Fe win the Del Rio League last year? Didn’t Santa Fe beat La Serna something like 21-7? Until someone knocks them off this is Santa Fe’s league to lose. La Serna will compete and has the best opportunity to overthrow Santa Fe but if teams can stop the run La Serna is in trouble. La Serna has not had a QB in a few years and it has shown. El Rancho has a lot to prove, they have had an erratic summer. They are the unknown. Whittier has a legit sophomore RB but no one else to support him, will be interesting to see if he stays at Whittier. Cal has underachieved the last two to three years, if the Condors don’t compete for a playoff spot its time for a coaching change.

@ The Reason: CIF appears to have a nice revenue stream going with its take from four rounds of division playoffs (including the championship games), state playoff games, and state bowl games.
I can understand CIF’s reluctance to depart from the status quo, which favors itself and the established football powers, who seem to pretty much run things. I just don’t like it.
Either substantial changes have to be made, or CIF can drop the pretense about good sportsmanship and fair play. I guess it is all about the money.

Anyone knows that followed ER last season was their failure to compete in the 4th quarter. That is a huge problem. Needless mistakes, penalties and downright dumb calls ruined the season. D backs were eaten alive in the 4th and you could see it coming. Maybe Medina can work some of his magic at ER. You can have a fancy offense with shifts and dump offs and 50 passes a game and no huddle but if you can’t play D and make 1st downs in the 4th well…… you are done my friend.

CIF doesn’t give a rip about the regular season because they don’t get a cut of the ticket sales for those games. Count these guys in for 10% or more of that action and you’ll see positive change.

@ co-captain- the mission valley league is chafa! Arroyo is officially irrelevant. No way arroy-ho can beat Ls or yet any team from the Del rio. But hey this is a sports blog and a guy can dream…nighty nite my boy.

@ Area-well said my friend! Last time I checked games were played with pads! Not a fan of 7 vs 7 all it is is assignments. I know the ranch got some good players and overall one of the best trenches offensively and defensively.

La Serna goes 8-2 overall and undefeated in league. They go out in the 2nd round. ER should breeze through preseason and be the #2 team in the DRL. Santa Fe and Cal struggle in non-league. Cal may only win 1 game in non-league. Whittier under performs as usual.

La serna will go 10-0 with a very dicilpine team and their defensive front. Offensively we will move the ball methodically. Playoffs will be fun! El rancho looks good as well with several key players returning. Look for them to make the playoffs with a 9-1/8-2 season and make some noise in the playoffs. I think cal and whittier will surprise a few teams and santa fe will be good as well. Del rio will be a dogfight this year. Ain’t no easy games makes for a great football season! Good luck to all teams!

Granted i hate excuses especially regarding 7 on 7, this is the least amount of off season passing I’ve seen for ER in maybe 10 years, there are some key reasons why and those around the program know why, it is a good reason that is totally acceptable, did ER look crappy in 7 on 7? Overall yes for almost the entire off season, I saw them 1 time at the rumble at the ranch and they looked terrible, then I saw them at a 7 on 7 at Rivera middle school and they looked vastly improved with a couple of very solid kids I hadn’t seen all summer, plus a pretty athletic kid from the IE who found his way to Pico very late in the summer. Then I heard rumblings of ER having a very solid front 7, I saw videos of ER mopping up SD at SD in line work, then i heard they did crappy at their own Linemen Comp, Then I saw them kick butt at the West Covina tournament amongst some pretty solid squads, if you told me a squad looked great in linemen work in the summer that’s all I would need to know to make an educated guess about a teams possible success. I laugh at people completly eating up that 7 on 7 2 hand touch crap, can’t wait till the pads come on so my boy has y’all QB’s for dinner. LS vs ER in week 10 for all the marbles nuff said.

Well, all right, another comment about Arroyo on a non-Mission Valley League thread.
But, you have to give the Knights credit for being one of the preeminent teams in the area. They attract a lot of attention for good reason.
A matchup between La Serna and Arroyo for a league title would be nice. A game between Arroyo and El Rancho would most likely be a good one in the near future.

However, I don’t think the high school football leagues in the San Gabriel Valley and nearby areas will be reorganized in a serious manner any time soon, even though an overhaul has long been needed.
The CIF Southern Section seems to be slow in taking action on anything, except when it comes to relaxing the rules on recruiting and transfers.

I’ll go along with sticking Arroyo into this league. I believe the Knights would quickly take the top spot way from La Serna, which is inexorably slipping without the leadership of Beltran.
