Great points. Only correction to St. Paul not playing teams in the immediate area. St. Paul did lose to Montebello last season. Yes last season, not this season.

    With regards to those rankings:
I am surprised St. Paul is ranked below La Serna. I’ve gone to see each of them play. Both are well coached. I think athletically, the Swordsmen have a slight advantage based on team speed. I think physically, the Lancers get a slight edge despite they seem to be a bit smaller.
Throw those things out the window (rankings & my BS opinion). La Serna’s kids understand this is about bragging rights in the Greater Whittier Area. Saint Paul has been a legendary program that most area teams have had in their sights but the opportunity has never been, until now. SP staff and administration may be more concerned about what is really at stake here. Their enrollment has struggled for quite some time now. Their team consist of quite a few kids from out of the area (recruiting). Which is what most parochial schools do. Lose this game to a public school in their immediate area and they may very well lose many future student-athletes. For LS, this is to declare local supremacy (not counting the bullies on the block, La Habra). If LS can pull this off, they may very well gain those future, local student-athletes that SP may lose. This game has quite a bit at stake, not just advancing to the Division 5 semi final game.

Should be a fun one to see if you can get a ticket. This may be a sell-out if such thing exist in a CIF playoff game, especially since SPHS only has one side stands. I wonder why they won’t put the visiting stands back up. I used to catch a few games back in those days of the 70s & 80s, watching some battles take place at The PIT. Wish I could be there. Hope my friends from both teams keep me posted with plenty of updates.

    Bet wishes to both teams!

It’s charming to talk about effort and heart winning the day, but for those who discount the value of polls and rankings, I ask: how much of your own hard-earned money would you be willing to bet on teams that are significantly lower in the numbers? For example, what would you be willing to risk on Fairmont Prep digging deep and upending El Monte? I like dreaming as much as the next guy, but at some point you we need to face a thing called reality.
You know why I like the polls? It helps me to decide what game is worth attending. It give me a rough guide to what might happen if I invest my time and money attending one game rather than another, that’s all.

As most know that have ever coached a day in their lives RANKINGS go out the window in most cases. It comes down to Heart and Coaching and the kids exicuting on the field. The staff at La serna has beat many teams the Rankings sttd. They had no chance. Beltran and Co. were part of that as well.
Good Luck to all area team.
From T. Peterson: I’ve never coached a day in my life, but I concur with you.

Here are the National and State rankings for local combatants:

    La Serna 1085 / 99 St. Paul 1517 / 127

    El Monte 3715 / 278 Fairmont Prep 11228 / 784

    Northview 781 / 82 Warren 1769 / 145

    Knight 2271 / 189 El Rancho 4436 / 322

    Linfield Christian 4042 / 295 Bell Gardens 6846 / 479

Hope this gives everyone a better understanding of what each team brings into their games this weekend. Incidentally, if CIF were to use these numbers when deciding on divisional membership, we would have more “competitive equity.”

Northview hasn’t had anybody match them all season. We thought San Marino, Los Altos, Covina, and San Dimas would. They wernt able too. What’s Northviews ceiling? Not sure. However; I do know one thing, Northview plays defense. Warren is loaded at the skill positions. They can score points. For me, the game will be decided on defense. Can Warren get defensive stops when they need too? That is the question we should be asking. Northview can score points too, and they play really good defense. This game will be close, it will not be a blow out.

Northview hasn’t had anyone match them all year, Skills wise they are absolutely loaded, they haven’t had to play their best yet because no one has brought it out of them.

Warren handles NV easier than some think. NV has problems with teams that match it speed and size with speed and size. Arcadia will have a tougher time at Temescal Canyon. 3 he bus ride in traffic will take its toll.

I think la serna rolls st.paul, el Monte over Fairmont prep, the northview vs Warren is gonna be a toss up? They both got skill positions to match each other. I think El Rancho will take it to knight and get the “W”. They played some good teams in (northview, la serna, whittier, bell gardens etc;) oh and add the mo val team. I think bell garden’s wins linfield christian, it’s one thing to see Beltrans offense on paper and another thing to stop it on the field. Give credit where credit is due! Goodluck to all our are teams!

Going to be a very difficult task but yes we are always the underdog and expected to lose anyway so let’s just go out there and leave it all on the field.

    @CALPREPS PROJECTIONS
You must have not seen our game this past Friday because Moreno Valley was big and athletic and look what the outcome was. Of course they came back but we finished them off and proved that we aren’t a cake walk.
It’s all good though we like being the underdog.

Can you share what Calpreps says about Arcadia vs Temescal Canyon

Every Monday, starting with games in October, Calpreps offers their computer-based picks. Here are today’s numbers for local teams:

St. Paul 28, La Serna 27
El Monte 52 Fairmont Prep 17
    Northview 35 Warren 22
    Knight 35 El Rancho 27
Linfield Christian 42 Bell Gardens 24

I believe the SP-LS game WILL be close as predicted, but I’m taking the Lancers…..El Monte will probably dominate even MORE than expected….Northview and Warren will be closer than the projections says, with Warren having a good chance to win…..Knight of Palmdale has too much size and athleticism for El Rancho…..and Bell Gardens will play Linfield Christian tough, but ultimately have its season end on Friday. Enjoy everyone!
