San Gabriel DC Randy Sanchez demonstrates what a four-way toss in May is all about: Teaching

T-Minus-131 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Man! You know what I thought when the Lakers’ Pau Gasol put back the game winner last night over Oklahoma City?

Yawn.

The Reds have Mayday…but we got football on May first…that’s why America is better.

Great day to be at John Scanlan Field at Keith Jones Stadium (or is that Keith Jones Field at John Scanlan Stadium, or should it just be called: Stadium 2003?)… The facility is gorgeous.

While I enjoyed watching the four-way toss between San Gabriel, Arroyo, Roosevelt, and Roybal… I still don’t want to park there on a Friday night…Because you don’t get out of the lot until Saturday morning.

Can we have a few more exits please?

SG cornerback coach Donald Bernard, needs a double cheeseburger. Perhaps a an exploratory visit to Armando’s would be in order.

“It’s all about teaching now,” said Roosevelt head coach Javier “El” Cid as he worked his players on the field. “Sometimes as coaches we get all worked up. They scored a touchdown, now we want to score a touchdown, but its really time to learn, learn, learn.”

Take note of headgear on Roybal player (left)...you could be seeing more of it in the future.

It didn’t take long to figure out sophomore-to-be Eric Alvarez is leading the pack to be San Gabriel’s new starting quarterback.

“It’s still a competition,” Mats HC Jude Oliva says. “But Alvarez reminds me of Steven Gonzalez (the team’s starting QB in 2004), he’s a sponge when it comes to picking things. up.”

Former Mid Valley staffer Rick Navarro was in the stands with his daughter enjoying the morning.

Really enjoyed the ESPN “30 for 30” film on the USFL. As an old Los Angeles Express fan, I was moved. Love the USFL! Long live JoJo Townsell!

“The question is what made Jim Singiser sick,” said His Arroyo Baldness looking less than his best on the sidelines. “B.J.’s last night or the play of his defense this morning?”

Last Add Singiser: The Arroyo HC clued us that last season’s all everything lineman Javier Lozano is considering Azusa Pacific.

Last Add Azusa Pacific: I may be late to the dance but I was happy to hear about the Cougars plans to move their program up to division two.

The Roybal players took the field wearing headgear something akin to what a boxer would wear when sparring or in the olympics. They are not mandatory now, but expect them to be in the future.

Was introduced to Matador defensive coordinator Randy Sanchez today. Sanchez is one of those guys I’d heard about forever in his stops from Alhambra, Montebello, Schurr, ELAC, and now San Gabriel but had never met.

Two young guys figuring into the SG defensive scheme in 2010 looked good as well; linebacker Joshua Baca and defensive back Jose Bravo.

For Covina, competing with a low enrollment in what will be a very fierce Valle Vista, its about the development of junior-to-be quarterback Billy Livingston. Described as a football junkie by Colts HC Darryl Thomas, Livingston will have help from Vinny Venegas, last season’s leading receiver, and sophomore-to-be Gevontray Ainsworth.

On defense Phil Romano and Eric Perez lend a little size to what is an undersized defense. Covina’s non-league schedule is not exactly forgiving with West Covina, Gladstone, El Monte, and Walnut.

Can we get a little help for Coach Thomas? Dude needs some bubbas to put in the trenches.

Last Add Covina: Did you know the Colts failed to make the post-season in football from 1954 through 1977. Just throwing it out there, I thought it was interesting.

Roosevelt had a girl working out with the team and someone asked me if I had an issue with a girl playing varsity football. NO!

I do not have an issue with girls playing football, I only have an issue with double standards. If she’s in pads and under a lid with the ball, then she needs to be lit up the same way a linebacker would attempt to light up Arroyo’s Mike Vasquez.

Is that possible? I don’t know, I wasn’t there a half hour when somebody said; take it wasy on her. She didn’t ask for that, but the sentiment of guys (drilled to be ultra sensitive about everything in our culture) is inherent.

There’s the problem.

Stay thirsty my friends…
