The Villasenors Take Over at Sierra Vista

By Tim Peterson

(Baldwin Park) – Sergio Villasenor and his son Matthew Villasenor have been named Co-Head Coaches at Sierra Vista Scott Schrader of TrojanInsider.com reported on Twitter.

Sergio Villasenor was the head coach at LA Wilson last season guiding the Mules to an 8-4 record overall and a playoff win over LA Marshall.  LA Wilson fell to Roosevelt in the second round.

“I feel Sierra Vista is a special place and I’m fired up to get to work. I don’t look too much into these past couple seasons because I know what our staff is capable of doing,” said Matthew Villasenor. “I can’t wait to meet the kids and get to work. It’s all about the Sierra Vista students and the Baldwin Park community.”

The Villasenors will replace Fabian Castillo who was dismissed last week. Castillo has since joined the staff at Baldwin Park as an assistant.

The Dons went 0-10 last year.

Every football team has co-head coaches of a sort. A good coach hires assistants he trusts, provides them with his coaching strategy then leaves them to do their work. Only a bad head coach thinks he can run a good program as a dictator. The only disruption comes when players or parents play one coach against the other in hopes of getting the outcome they want.

When this was posted on Twitter everyone was questioning who would make the critical calls when necessary between the two. I’m pretty sure it has been worked out between them well in advance.
Co coaches can work. Look at any marriage. If there is any question who has the final say when both disagree just ask her. She will tell you, and probably laugh that you ever doubted her.
