Richard Perry and Diamond Bar have a big Hacienda League game against Covina Thursday night.
All kickoffs are at 7:00 PM unless otherwise indicated:
Thursday October 16
Diamond Bar (2-5) at Covina (3-4)
Diamond Bar has won two straight in the Hacienda League after losing its first five games. Covina has lost its last two league games including a 47-6 rout at the hands of Los Altos last week. The Brahmas offense is starting to pick it up now while the Colts’ defense is having trouble making stops. Diamond Bar wins its third straight.
Diamond Bar 34 Covina 24
Chino (3-4) at Los Altos (7-0)
Los Altos is perfect so far. Some thought that would change in league but the Conquerors have continued to win. Chino won its league opener over Covina and took care of Walnut last week. There are still three league games to play after this week but for right now this is the battle for first place in the Hacienda. Los Altos has met every challenge so far this year. The Conqs will answer the bell again.
Los Altos 24 Chino 17
Friday October 17
Rio Hondo Prep (7-0) at Viewpoint (7-0)
Rio Hondo Prep just keeps rolling along. The Kares even went to Dallas, Texas and still came away with a three-touchdown victory. Viewpoint is undefeated as well but hasn’t played the schedule that Rio Hondo Prep has. At this point people aren’t asking can the Kares win but can they ever lose? They might eventually but not in this one. Kares will win their eighth straight.
Rio Hondo Prep 35 Viewpoint 14
Bonita (4-3, 5-2 on field) at Claremont (6-1)
Bonita has won its last four games after a loss to Aquinas back on September 5th. Claremont took one on the chin last week at Charter Oak after winning its first six games. Travis Lippert is back at quarterback for the Bearcats after missing several games with an injury. He led them to a big win over Glendora last week. Claremont’s quarterback Brandon Coronado is out as well and is questionable this week. Bonita, especially with Lippert healthy has a little too much for the Wolfpack. Bonita comes out on top.
Bonita 28 Claremont 10
Charter Oak (6-1) at Los Osos (3-4)
Charter Oak proved it’s the team to beat in the Sierra League with a dominant performance last week over a previously unbeaten Claremont team. Tory Huff, Corin Berry and JD Sanchez were all hitting on all cylinders. Sanchez scored three times in the red zone. Los Osos picked up its first league win last week with a victory over Colony. The Chargers will be tested in league before the season ends but they’ll win this one.
Charter Oak 31 Los Osos 13
Monrovia (5-2) at La Canada (7-1)
That was a tough break for Monrovia when quarterback Jesse Saucedo went down with a season ending injury in a win over Baldwin Park. The Wildcats have lost their last two games including a 17-14 loss last week to St. Genevieve. A loss this week could mean a possible third place finish in the Rio Hondo with San Marino still on the horizon. La Canada let one get away last week in a frustrating defeat to South Pasadena. The Spartans still have their eye on a league title and will need a win here to have any shot at that. The Spartans will be in desperation mode. It won’t be easy but La Canada finds a way. Spartans win in a close call.
La Canada 27 Monrovia 24
Northview (6-1) at San Dimas (4-3, 3-4 on field)
The narrative early in the season was that it’s a down year for Northview. It has been anything but. The Vikings have won six of seven games including a big win over La Serna. Last week they routed Diamond Ranch 47-14. San Dimas blew out Diamond Ranch as well two weeks ago but last week the Saints suffered a three-point loss to West Covina. The Saints will pound the ball and may have a shot if they can keep the ball away from Northview’s potent offense. They may hang in for awhile but in the end the Vikings get it done. It’s not a down year for Northview.
Northview 31 San Dimas 21
Baldwin Park (4-3) at West Covina (5-2)
While West Covina was beating San Dimas Baldwin Park was losing its third straight game to Alta Loma. The Braves fell to Monrovia and then lost its first two Valle Vista League games to Northview and Alta Loma. The Braves need a win here to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth. West Covina is a tough out. The Bulldogs were down late in the game before rallying to beat San Dimas. In comparing scores, Baldwin Park lost to Alta Loma 35-6 while West Covina beat Alta Loma 28-26. The Braves will push West Covina, even into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs will prevail in the end.

cc:: Div.7,000 Special Ed. Rancho FB
El Rancho is ranked #6,913 in the nation by Max Preps.
So you only need to get better than 5,296 other High School football teams to elevate to La Serna’s strong level.
In the meantime, I’ll talk to my co-workers to see if we can create a Division 7,000 (Special Ed) FB Playoff Div. in case you are still terrible that way you can grab a spot in the equity tardation playoffs.
La Serna football currently ranked number 1617 in the nation so good for them. Only 1616 teams that are better.
The National Sports News Service (NSNS) voted El Rancho #6 in the nation in 1968, the year you are saying ER only deserves half a title. The team that tied the Dons that year, St Paul, was rated #7 by that sports organization. A child could see this means the Dons actually deserved the outright title in that game. As for 1960, ER got the championship in the 3A division, one step from the top. Which brings us to 1966, when The Pico Rivera team was named national champions. You can say this is a mythical title, not won on the field, but it also means that sports writers throughout the country had to have known El Rancho’s football program was tremendous, or they wouldn’t have even considered voting them the top spot.
I can’t recall when La Serna football was on the radar of the national press, or when that program ranked in the top ten of the nation. Your notion that the Whittier Lancers somehow have gone beyond the accomplishments of ER football is more than absurd; it’s insulting for its ignorance.

El Rancho’s 2.5 All Time CiF FB Titles
LOL
Welp Downey & La Serna both won 2 CIF titles
Downey beat La Serna by 8 in their 1st one (so obviously same division)
Downey won their other CIF Title in D4, the same as La Serna, except La Serna went on to win the Regional and State Championship, and Downey lost in the Regional.
So Advantage La Serna. Thanks for pointing that out.
National Champs. Downey or LS got on of those or even close to it? Enuf said!!
You neglected to mention that La Serna’s program was already well established in terms of robbing local talent by 2010, whereas Williams needed a couple years to get comfortable in the thievery business. Then, the crowing about all the LS titles and finals appearances needs to be qualified by specifying what divisions we’re talking about. If you’re not adding or subtracting weight to a CIF title according to division, then you’ve got to put Pioneer right up there with you guys, because they won a plaque a year ago.
I agree, Downey is very good and has been under Jack Williams. This year they are better than La Serna. Will they be next year? We shall see. But since Williams has been at Downey since 2010 which coincides with when La Serna became really good let’s compare the two programs.
La Serna vs Downey (2010-2025)

2 Excellent HS programs. The odds say the winner of LS vs Downey next year wil likely produce the new league’s Champion.
Sports Man is just prepping everyone into thinking that being second place to Downey is a good thing because his LS squad will not be able to compete against the Vikings with the upcoming league shakeup that will be taking place next year.
It’s the same thing the HCs did at La Mirada, Buena Park, Warren all did now they’re just doing it better. Can’t be mad at him, he’s just playing the game better.
Sorry not impressed with used car salesmen like Jack, he can look you in the face and talk about how he misses the days of everyone being home grown and be recruiting your players behind your back at the same time.
Speaking of long-tenured coaches who have been excellent for decades, we’d be remiss not to mention Frank Mazzotta of La Habra. This is not to diminish Williams, just to give Frank his due as well.
Downey has been the powerhouse of previous league i think. Now are they best team in suburban league (if still called that) ? I think second place finish is good, unless those guys who left have won many championships.
The truth is there are few schools that have put together the runs and successes of Jack Williams and the Downey staff. There are even fewer that have done this year after year, across decades. Downey is a gem of a program that attracts and breeds great football players in every class. There are few public schools besides the centennials and mission viejos that can overshadow what the Downey program has done for a long time. A lot of other schools do much less and are rewarded with a much bigger spotlight, especially by the “twitter high school sports journalists “.
Do these football factories really represent the high school community.I think not. Should have a division made up of just players living in attendance area with no transfer papers needed.
Tim does Duane archive galleries anywhere?
From T. Peterson: Yes. He posts them on Instagram and Facebook.
The football program at Warren, unlike the one at Downey, has been abandoned by the 2 coaches (Lara and Pearson) who had things humming on a high level. It makes us wonder what attracted those guys and more importantly, what made them walk away. My guess is that they both saw the recruiting struggle with Jack Williams of Downey to be too steep a hill to climb. Too bad…the crosstown game won’t be the same with the Bears being strong.
