(Glendora) – La Canada’s last ditch three point shot at the buzzer fell short and Colony held on to beat the Spartans 50-47 Saturday night to capture the CIF Division 2A Championship at Felix Event Center at Azusa Pacific.

Brenton Knapper made one of two free throws for Colony with six seconds left to leave the door open for la Canada. But Ryan Grande’s heave at the buzzer came up short and the celebration ensued. The Titans had trouble putting the Spartans away. La Canada continued to foul late in the final quarter and Colony missed three key free throws in the final minute to keep the LC faithful hopes alive.

The game was tight from the outset. La Canada led by two at 13-11 after one, and then went on a 6-0 run to open the second quarter to take a 19-11 lead. But Colony battled back to tie it at 22 at halftime.

Sedrick Altman, who is a Pepperdine commit, had 11 points at the half to lead the Titans while Ryan Graves had nine and Zach Feehan eight for La Canada.

Colony warmed up after the break with a 19 point third quarter to carry a 41-36 lead into the fourth. Neither team could establish any momentum early in the fourth as the teams went scoreless though the first three minutes.

Graves hit a three to get the Spartans even at 41 but Colony scored the next two buckets to go up 45-41. After that the Spartans played catch-up. LC had a golden opportunity after Knapper missed a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left but Kyle Brown slipped out of bounds and turned the ball back over to Colony with seven seconds left.

Knapper was fouled again and made the second free throw but the Spartans came up short on their last possession.

Altman led all scorers with 21 points for Colony. He was 7 of 24 from the field and 5 of 8 from the line. The Titans had only four players score. After Altman, Noah Castillo hit three pointers for nine points, Knapper had 12 and Denim Dawson added eight. For La Canada Graves led the way with 15, Feehan scored 14, and Brown had eight.

The Spartans were 5 of 14 from three point range and shot 46 percent from the field overall. Colony was just 34 percent from the floor but still managed to get the victory.

Congratulations to the Colony basketball team for this win, and also to the Santa Fe girls team, which beat Hillcrest for the lady Chiefs’ first-ever CIF title.
