Thomas Takes Over at Upland

(Upland) – Darryl Thomas, who was a former head coach at Covina, has been named the head football coach at Upland he confirmed Friday.

Thomas, who has served as the defensive coordinator at Upland the last three years, stepped down as the HC at Covina after the 2011 season following a 15-year run. He won five Valle Vista league titles and had five CIF semi final appearances while compiling an overall record of 103-70 during his stint.

Thomas originally resigned at Covina to spend more time with his family and watch his oldest son play football at Upland. He has since joined the staff and took over the defense three years ago.

Thomas takes over for the legendary Tim Salter who coached the Highlanders for 25 years winning four Southern Section championships and a CIF Division 2 title this past season.

“I’m excited to be a head coach again and looking forward to taking over the program,” Thomas said.

Upland competes in the tough Baseline League and finished 4-1 last season falling only to Rancho Cucamonga which plays in Division 1. The Highlanders were 12-3 overall and beat Rancho Verde 24-13 in the Division 2 title game.
