Game Night: Week 1

Can Monrovia’s D shut down Alta Loma?

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday August 29

Eisenhower (0-1) at La Serna (1-0) at California

La Serna always plays a brutal non-league schedule and always seems to be up to the task. Last week the Lacers beat a solid Murrieta Mesa team by 30. Eisenhower competed but ultimately fell to defending CIF champion South Hills 28-12. Eisenhower  will compete again but La Serna comes out on top.

La Serna 31 Eisenhower 14

Friday August 30

Nogales (0-1) at Arroyo (1-0)

Last Year: Arroyo 48-7

Arroyo is looking to get well after last week’s blow out loss to Bonita. The Knights couldn’t have picked a better team to do it against. Nogales didn’t look good in a 22-0 loss to Baldwin Park. The Nobles are in for a long night.

Arroyo 42 Nogales 7

El Rancho (0-1) at Bell Gardens (0-1)

Last Year: El Rancho 45-28

El Rancho raised a few eyebrows last week. Sure, the Dons lost. But they lost to a Northview team that has its sight set on a CIF title. El Rancho didn’t go away and had the ball with a chance to tie it with just over two minutes left. The Vikings knew they were in a fight. Bell Gardens got smacked by Segerstrom. The question – is Segerstrom that good or BG that bad? We’ll find out this week. El Rancho prevails.

El Rancho 34 Bell Gardens 20

Charter Oak (1-0) at Colony (0-1)

Lighting up San Marino is one thing. Colony is a different kettle of fish. Last week the Chargers had emotion and motivation on their side and rode that wave to a big victory. That might not be enough to beat Colony. Last week the Titans fell to Carter by one point and will be looking to get that bad taste out of their mouth. Colony is big, bad and loaded  with talent. Charter Oak will eventually wear down. Colony gets the victory.

Colony 35 Charter Oak 21

Pasadena (1-0) at Maranatha (1-0)

Last Year: Pasadena 14-12

Pasadena may have something here. The Bulldogs looked good in the summer and then kicked things off with a three touchdown win over St. Genevieve. Head Coach Dejuan Shamburger seems to have the program going in the right direction. Maranatha, led by former NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington, beat Crean Lutheran 34-17 in the opener. The Minutemen are hoping to avenge last year’s two-point loss. Should be a good offensive show and a great atmosphere at Maranatha High School on a Friday night. Bulldogs do just enough to win the “Battle for Rose City”.

Pasadena 27 Maranatha 24

Alta Loma (1-0) at Monrovia (1-0)

Last Year: Alta Loma 23-21

Monrovia got the W last week but against a West Covina team that has been down the last few years, 28-14 didn’t really stand out. Alta Loma, always a tough out in the Palomares, knocked out a good Don Lugo squad 14-6. The Wildcats will need a better performance than they had versus West Covina. If they don’t Alta Loma will take advantage. Alta Loma pulls it off late.

Alta Loma 24 Monrovia 21

San Marino (0-1) at Northview (1-0) Covina District Field

Last Year: Northview 28-10

If San Marino can get an early score, and maybe get a stop and a turnover…nah, who am I kidding? Northview rolls. In fact the Viking may take out a little frustration on the Titans after a close call with El Rancho last week. Northview jumps out in the first quarter and never looks back. Big night for the Thompson Two, James Jimenez and company.

Northview 48 San Marino 7

Montebello (0-1) at San Dimas (0-0)

Montebello had a rough opening night against Garfield. It doesn’t get any easier this week for Pete Gonzalez’ Oilers. San Dimas has a big solid offensive line and a devastating running attack. But isn’t that the Saints usual MO? Also for San Dimas it’s their season opener so you know they’ll come charging out of the gate. Saints get off and running.

San Dimas 31 Montebello 13

No need to brag about muir. I wanted some coverage about pregame , during and post game. I don’t know anything about hart and I won’t be able to make the game. But I guess muir isn’t in Midvalley coverage area or there is better local games to cover.

I believe Alhambra has the same schedule as last year and still battled for league last year…so I think your point is a little off. MHS,BG and schurr have been middle of the pact teams,Alhambra just joined them. I have a question for you guys. When is BG going to make some noise ? Wasn’t Beltran going to come in here and win ring(s)? Just goes to show, that when your don’t have the the Jimmy’s and the joes. Coaching football is a lot harder

    LS is the Real Deal…
    Final 42-14 LS

Halftime score 42-7 LS, pulling the starting QB in the third and running clock in the fourth, to a team from the Inland Empire that went 14-1 last year and won the CIF championship.

You’re accusing me of being an Arroyo homer? You sir are wrong. I actually played at Mountain View over 20 years ago. So if I’m gonna be unbiased it’s gonna be towards the Vikings. If you’re talking about me comparing EM to Arroyo I made the point that EM which is the class of the league scheduled like it was say…. a MTVW team. I am a fan of the league I love watching tough kids play football that’s usually a staple in the MVL. Arroyo played Bonita EM played a YMCA team. That’s my criticism oh and for the record EM is the MVL best chance at a CIF championship so I am pulling for them.

Alhambra bright spot?… Kudos for them on the win! That’s a nice start for them… However, beating South El Monte and then potentially Rowland and Temple City to be 3-0… That’s not exactly a streak of games that tests you to know where you stand… Schurr plays Cal Hi, Morningside, Arroyo at least Arroyo is traditionally a good team to test yourself again… BG plays Segerstrom and El Rancho which are 2 very good teams! Good tests and the ER game is a rivalry game too so a lot of emotion that night!… Montebello playing Garfield, San Dimas, Crescenta Valley, El Rancho, La Serna. No soft games at all in that schedule. They could very well go 0-5 however, in league and maybe even playoffs Montebello may not face a team that tough rest of the year

Same old Mr. Goldricker every time anybody wins besides Arroyo he down plays the win, criticizes the team that won, but when Arroyo wins, oh wow we dont hear the end of how dominant Arroyo is or how tuff the opponent was. A win is a win Good luck to all El Monte teams,

My Two Cents! Bro. that about ALL your mind is worth. I am not a Coach, and I can coach a team and not get 28 – 3 in penalties. Something was WRONG all the way with that picture.

Rosemead and San Gabriel aren’t worthy of coverage? They’re both in the middle of the valley and are crosstown rivals.
From T. Peterson: We had a writer all set to go there and they moved the game to Thursday. What is that? And even with that we still covered them. Game story is up!

    @ “Del Rio Watcher”
we still lose some kids to “other” schools…. its unfortunate but we lately we have been able to keep some KEY players that could have easily gone to any school they wanted and had success…. coach medrano and staff are honestly coaching these kids up! its a beautiful thing to see, tbh.

this is only pre-season, beltran knows what hes doing… i still say montebello is going to take it.. but dont sleep on schurr bc they are young… youngest team playing probably… Del Rio league was well represented last week so it looks to be some tough games at the end of regular season.

    MVL predictions for the week.
El Monte will repeat its performance vs Sotomayor this week against Glenn. This is the second week in a row of playing overmatched teams. All starters should be sitting at the end of the first quarter. I hope this doesn’t give the lions a false sense of invincibility. 50-0 Lions.

Arroyo will look to get back on track vs Nogales. I was shocked the Nobles were shutout after all the talk of Robles being an offensive guru despite having a couple phenomenal athletes. Arroyo fell behind early and the bottom fell out I believe they are a better team than what they showed last week. I’m predicting 38-14 Knights.

SEM has a tough task ahead Covina who is looking to make a statement after getting blasted by Los Altos. Covina should be able to move the ball at will. SEM surprisingly passed the ball pretty well haven’t said that for a few years. But I gotta think Covina is able to stifle the Eagle Offense. Covina 42-7

Rosemead got a win last vs an over matched HP team. So we still don’t know how good they are. This week should give us a better insight vs San Gabriel. I think Rosemead wins a tough one here 28–21

Mountain View got beat 53-14 last week vs South Pasadena are these the same old Vikings? Probably. But the Vikings always play tough. This week they play Workman if they can beat Workman it’s gonna be a loooooong year! I’m going with the Vikings here 31-21

Gabrielino almost pulled the upset vs a hyped up team in SV. Losing on the final drive is a heart break but it does give a team hope in a weird way. Gab should beat Contreras big this week. I’m predicting 38-7

Um, there are no moral victories here. A win is a win and a loss is a loss. Are you really suggesting that St. Paul and La Serna draw from the BG neighborhood? Or am I misunderstanding your statement? That sentence is oddly structured and I genuinely don’t understand which kids are going where.

In any case you can make Beltran seem like coach of the year all you want – but I wouldn’t trust him coaching my kid. Can’t say too much more or ol’ Peterson won’t post it.

Bell Gardens got beat up by a good 8-3 Segerstrom team 42-0. ER lost to a good 12-1 Northview team 31-23. Beltran has scheduled up for 3 of 5 non league games ER scheduled up only 2 of 6 non league games. These tests that Beltran puts on his team will fare them well come league play and playoff time like last year Anything less than a 3 touchdown win for El Rancho will be a BG win. The teams draw from a same pool of local neighborhood players but still lose guys to St. Paul and La Serna for El Rancho and Downey Warren and Garfield for BG. As I understand more players are staying at ER and BG because of fine stable coaching and both these teams are getting better year by year.

@Wildcat81, 28-3 in penalties is the referees’ fault? You could call it a lot of things such as coaching, player discipline (which is a reflection of coaching), mental mistakes, dumb mistakes, etc. Let’s assume the refs only got it half right, that would still make it 14-3. I just hope you are not one of the coaches coaching those kids. Otherwise, I would hate to see what kind of adults they will become.
