Saxon Signs Out at Temple City

Riley Saxon has stepped down as the head coach at Temple City.

By Tim Peterson

(Temple City) – Riley Saxon has stepped down as the head football coach at Temple City after four years he confirmed Monday.

Saxon took over for Marc Shettleroe after the 2016 campaign and guided the Rams to a 5-4 record in his first year in 2017 but missed the playoffs.

The Rams then went 4-5 the following year and 2-6 in 2019. The Rams played just one game in the recently concluded Spring season – a 35-8 loss to South Pasadena on April 16. Temple City went 11-16 during Saxon’s tenure.

Saxon indicated that the reason he resigned was to spend more time with his family. “1000 percent. That’s the only reason. I actually stepped down last year. I made it official in February but the pandemic hit before they could start interviews,” Saxon said. “So, I told the principal that I’d come back for one more year so the kids have some sense of stability.”

Temple City will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

Will there be a team at TCHS next season (by which I mean, “ever again”)?

They should up the stipend. Make it worth the coaches while. You’re sure to get better candidates. Football should be $20,000 and other sports $15,000. Assistants should make around $5,000.

Will the program ever recover? Remember when they had Anthony White?

That’s a quality dude right there. Stuck around because it was good for the kids. Temple City admin, however, should have got on the ball and tried to find someone in February and make it a quicker process. Schools all over California were having interviews via zoom. Instead, they’re stuck in the rat race of finding a coach in May at the earliest.

There is no money in coaching for all the responsibilities that is required. That’s the bottom line. If these coaches where getting $200,000 a year for coaching and teaching their classes it would be hard to walk away. But, these guys are making about $3,000-$5,000 for year around training. To top it off many schools are looking for walk on coaches, usually the schools that don’t care about sports. A walk on football coach is a recipe for disaster. Just to name a few walk on coaches that are not winning: LA 1-4, LP 0-3, Nogales 0-4, etc…
