Game Night: Week 5

Richie Munoz and Bishop Amat travel to Damien Friday night. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday September 22

Sierra Vista (4-1) at Covina (1-3) (Covina District Field)

Sierra Vista is off to a nice start winning four of its first five games. It was a struggle for Covina but then suddenly last week the Colts put it on Bell Gardens 41-0. Sierra Vista may not have played a team that is in Covina’s class just yet. Colts get the victory.

Covina 28 Sierra Vista 20

Friday September 23

Charter Oak (4-0) at West Covina (2-3)

Charter Oak is the real deal. The Chargers have won close ones,16-15 over Chino Hills, and the not so close ones, 55-7 over South Hills. This could be a special year for CO. West Covina has been playing good ball. The Bulldogs also blew out South Hills and lost two close calls to Alta Loma and Valencia. This is a game that if Charter Oak isn’t careful West Covina could jump up and bite them. I don’t think that happens. CO takes care of business.

Charter Oak 27 West Covina 16

Diamond Bar (5-0) at Baldwin Park (4-1)

Raise your hand if you thought Diamond Bar would be 5-0. Ok, put them down. No you didn’t. Matt Castaneda has done great job turning the Brahmas around. Baldwin Park is having a nice season as well. The Braves have stumbled only once, to Schurr, but otherwise have been near perfect. Baldwin Park can score while Diamond Bar has done a pretty good job defensively. Braves may jump out early but Diamond Bar makes the play down the stretch. The Brahmas stay unbeaten.

Diamond Bar 24 Baldwin Park 17

San Dimas (3-2) at Monrovia (3-1)

Monrovia is looking to bounce back from a big loss to Ayala. The Wildcats had a bye last week to regroup. San Dimas fell to Bonita in the Smudge Pot but rebounded nicely last week in a win over Schurr. San Dimas needs to slow the game down and establish the running attack. If the Saints can do that they have a shot. The question is can they stay with the Monrovia receivers like Carlos Hernandez and Jaylen Moore? It’s a difficult task. The Wildcats will win that battle.

Monrovia 34 San Dimas 20

Bishop Amat (3-1) at Damien (1-4)

Bishop Amat’s only loss was to St John Bosco. The ’85 Chicago Bears would have had trouble beating St. John Bosco. Damien has lost to Pasadena, Orange Lutheran, La Serna, etc. I just don’t see this being close. Amat rolls.

Bishop Amat 35 Damien 7

California (2-3) at Los Altos (1-4)

Two teams that could really use a win before heading into league. Los Altos has had trouble finding its rhythm under Dale Ziola, who returned for his second stint as head coach. The Conquerors have lost four straight after an opening night win over Wilson. They have one more non league game, next week against Charter Oak, before starting Valle Vista League play. If the Conqs can avoid the turnovers they have a shot to beat Cal. The Condors have been up and down although their schedule hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park. Cal should have enough. The Condors win this one and gain some momentum heading into a war with La Serna next week.

California 30 Los Altos 21

San Gabriel (3-0) at Temple City (2-2)

Temple City, under Riley Saxon, has done a good job in winning two games. This is a program that didn’t win a game in 2021. San Gabriel has been on the rise the last couple of seasons. The Matadors are 3-0 this year including an impressive 28-24 win over San Marino last week. The Rams have bit off a little more than they can chew here. Mats win big.

San Gabriel 42 Temple City 14

Diamond Ranch (1-4) at Glendora (1-4) (Citrus College)

Both teams are 1-4 but with the exception of Los Altos, Glendora has played a schedule that could appropriately be called a death march. It’s been a struggle for Diamond Ranch offensively. The Panthers have scored a combined 21 points in their four losses which include two shutouts. Glendora will get well in this one. It might be just what the Tartans need.

Glendora 35 Diamond Ranch 6

    @?

Damned if you and and damned if you don’t I suppose. If I back up LS I get crapped on for doing so and when I make an obvious statement of Amat being better I get crapped on.

All good though. LS would crap all over your team anyway… Unless it’s Amat lol

LS has some skilled players but they would get destroyed by Amats lineman. The O line scores TD’s

Agreed. The program has turned around at SV. Once coach C brings in recruits they will be contending for a CIF championship.

Likely so , but it is the perfect schedule. They were horrible last year , and they need weak teams to build confidence , and assure record over .500; just saying be realistic . S V did not go running clock vs Covina , they lost by 19.

I’m not saying Coach C isn’t doing a great job , he is ; but keep things in perspective. Covina would never even schedule Ontario or Gladstone lol

SV only decent win over Nogales which has -40 power rating

Also lost every game last year with this exact team and are currently sitting at 4-1. 😁 Tezarras stays in the game they win he didn’t play the whole second half. It happens.

Why? SG is good. But they’re also a few years from being 2-8 let them build with a few 8-2, 10-0, 9-1 seasons and let kids come in then toughen up that schedule. Because they toughen up and end up in a D10 where they can’t compete. They’re a D12-14 school and that’s fine. Get that ring.

Why not LS? They recruit better than Amat. LS 21 Amat 10. What does Amat have that LS doesn’t. LS has advantage in almost every spot except maybe at RB. And the are just as deep if not deeper than Amat. A great playoff match up. If not make it happen next year. No sense scheduling Damien for either team. Damien going back to the future, the Gano years.

San Gabriel will probably be 5-0 after TC, they do need to step up their non-league schedule a bit, and they are senior heavy.

Mt View is still Mt View but it looks like their coach is making an effort. Kudos to him and their kids. They seemed to buy in. I don’t think it’ll happen but next week MV plays a down Arroyo squad. Are the Vikes gonna party like it’s 1980????

I know the MVL is crap this year but hey, the kids still love to see their name online.

Deservedly so ; the league has deteriorated beyond expectations!

It’s an off year for Arroyo and still no challengers. Rosemead (0-4)has been running clock three of four losses. Who knows which of these remaining squads will get automatic Division 14 playoff bids ? Pulling for Mountain View , at least they have a couple wins and it would mean something to the school.
