Big game for both teams this Friday night at Baldwin Park. The Braves have lost only once in their first five games, to Schurr, and a win over Diamond Bar would show that they are a team to be reckoned with.

A win for Diamond Bar and the Brahmas would remain undefeated at 6-0 and the secret would be out that Diamond Bar is for real. What a job new head coach Matt Castaneda has done guiding the Brahmas to a 5-0 record. Players to watch: Diamond Bar receiver Maddox Bernardino has 29 catches for 490 yards and 6 touchdowns. Baldwin Park quarterback Drew Knight has thrown for 1,333 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Covina has been Jekyll and Hyde. The Colts lost their first three games and were blown out by Northview 42-12 two weeks ago. Then they rebounded to rout Bell Gardens last week 41-0. Bell Gardens was coming off a 65-0 win over South El Monte. So it looks like the Colts have figured something out. Now they get Sierra Vista at home. The Dons have won three of four with Eric “Tarzan” Terrazas running wild. Consensus for this one is all over the place. Some Twitter Warriors have the Colts blowing the Dons out while others have it close. Nobody gets blown out here. I like Covina…close. But if Sierra Vista pulls something it wouldn’t be a surprise. Go check it out Thursday night at Covina District Field.

What’s up with Pasadena and all of these one-point games? The Bulldogs lost to La Serna by one, and beat Damien and Loyola by one. They also beat Colony by a touchdown. Four of their five games have been close. Bottom line though is through a schedule that would make UCLA cringe Pasadena is 4-1. The Dogs have a bye this week before they roll though the Pacific League. “People thought we were biting off more then we can chew with our preseason schedule. After going 4-1 I guess we don’t chew our food,” said Pasadena OC Robert Maxie on Twitter. Great line.

Not sure what Top 10 is being thrown together but whichever area it is Downey should be in the mix. The Vikings lost the opener to Corona del Mar but have blown out everybody since. I mean, it was Corona del Mar. Last week they blew out St. Paul. The Vikings have a quarterback, Aidan Chiles, who has already committed to Oregon State. Go watch him play and you’ll know why. They have a running back in Keion Andrew who would be getting D1 looks if he wasn’t 5’7″. Downey is starting three Freshman. SGV, Orange County, anywhere you want to place them, the Vikes are a Top 10 team.

Don’t look now but Mt. View is in first place in the Mission Valley League. The Vikings are 3-2 while the rest of the MVL is a combined 3-16. Rosemead and El Monte are a combined 0-8 and the Panthers have been outscored 84-6 in their last two games. South El Monte is 1-3 and has lost three in a row. The Eagles have been on the wrong side of a 119-14 score in the last two games. Bell Gardens beat them two weeks ago 65-0. Ouch! Can Mt. View actually win the MVL or at least finish in the top 3 and a make a playoff appearance? History would say no but for the Viking faithful right now hope springs eternal.

San Gabriel is on the rise. The Matadors are 3-0 and should be 4-0 with a win over Temple City this week. We saw this last year though when SG started 7-0 before getting torched by Bell Gardens and Schurr in two of their last three games. Although the Mats had a nice year, 9-3 overall, they weren’t quite ready for the Almont. We’ll find out right away this year when San Gabriel opens league play next Thursday night at Schurr. If SG wins that one it could run the table. Unless of course the Matadors are biting off more than they can chew. Maybe they won’t chew their food.

SG has been patient with coach Encinas, and he has improved the program season after season. At least they are relevant again.

Very good teams now get very good transfers that have been waiting in the sit out period. Waiting for a play off run for already loaded teams. CIF sucks!!
