Four Way Toss at Bonita

Los Altos quarterback David Poyet

(La Verne) – Bonita hosted a four way passing league Thursday. Azusa, Los Altos and Glendora joined the Bearcats in the competition. Here’s how it looked from one correspondent’s perspective.

Azusa

The first thing to say about Azusa is I know why they won the SGV Shootout. The Aztecs competed with everyone today; they showed they had the drive. Jose Nunez was pretty sharp today and he also had some pretty big targets. He found Abraham Ochoa several times. Their best showing was against Glendora. They played solid defense. The observation from this past weekend is true. Azusa will be just fine. This won’t be a re-building year for them as I first thought, but it will be another building year for Head Coach Joe Scherf as he has brought Azusa back from the depths.

 Los Altos

Had to say I was surprised today. They competed and played tough against Glendora in the first game. From what I’ve seen so far this summer and from what happened this weekend at the SGV shootout I didn’t expect to see much when I walked onto the track at Glenn Davis Stadium this afternoon. And yet there is a glimmer of hope. I don’t think this will be Los Altos year, but I think they can win some games and Coach Jim Arellanes has his kids buying in. David Poyet showed some nice things and showed he also needs to be more consistent with his throws. Things I didn’t see were the players that had transferred out of the program most notably Ryan Longoria who could definitely help the Conquerors win a game or two. Los Altos’ defense played tough with Glendora picking off Chad Jeffries twice in the first defensive set. Another thing I liked was the defensive coordinator on the sideline coaching up his players explaining why his defensive backs got beat when they did and how to fix it on the next play. They played hard today but in comparison to the other teams on the field they were smaller and slower. As I said there is hope for this once proud program.

 Glendora

It was a struggle at times for the Tartans today. Or maybe it was the talent at other schools that matched up against them. Chad Jeffries lost his two leading rushers last season in Andre Holmes and Dawani Bankhead however they believe Donovan Holmes should fill part of the gap left by them. He also lost four of his top five receivers. Coach Mark Pasquarella believes that they have guys to fill the gap. However it looks like it could be a tough season for the Tartans as they move into the Baseline League with the likes of Ranch Cucamonga, Los Osos, Upland and Etiwanda. Especially when three of the four semifinalists in the Central Division came from the Baseline in Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga, and eventual Champion Upland. Another note is that they move from the Central to the Inland Division. Back to Jeffries: He didn’t look real sharp today but that probably has a lot to do with him attempting to discover who will be the guys he will want to throw to next season.

I didn’t see anything new with Coach Eric Podley’s Bearcats. They’ve kept working since making it to the quarter finals of the Air Assault Tournament and losing to a good Valencia team. They’ve continued to get better which is what should be happening with the talent that is coming back. Garrett Pendleton again looked good connecting with the Horine brothers, KC Huth, Cameron Salce, Daniel Harriman and others. Zach Brungard is back from a groin injury but Matt Gelalich was out attending to family matters. The Bearcats are at full strength and surviving the next two days will be healthy before they shut down for the summer before fall camp. A play that stood out was a pass from back up quarterback Greg Spathias to Benjamin Cisneros. Spathias was able to get in a lot of reps today as Garrett Pendleton rested his arm. It was also good for Spathias because he came back from a hand injury a week or so ago. Overall the Bearcats looked good heading into the Claremont Tournament which begins Friday, July 16th.
