(Covina) – The West held on to beat the East 14-13 in the first ever SGV Bowl Friday night before a big crowd at Lou Farrar Stadium at Charter Oak High School.

The East had a golden opportunity to win the game but Charter Oak’s Luis Marin missed a 32-yard field goal with 36 seconds left.

The West scored first on its opening drive marching 57 yards on nine plays with Monrovia’s Marcel Jones scoring from six yards out for a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the West scored again courtesy of a big play. South Pasadena’s Jackson Freking found San Gabriel’s TJ Daley who hauled it in and broke free for a 78-yard touchdown for a 14-0 advantage with 4:32 left in the first half.

It appeared the West may even extend the advantage before halftime but the East defense rose up to turn the tide. La Serna’s Chase Bernal scooped up a fumble and raced 18 yards for a score to cut the lead to seven with 2:22 remaining. The teams went into the break with the West up 14-7.

The East had a big chance in the third quarter but the West defense made a stop at its own four-yard line. But on its next possession the East did cash in. Bishop Amat’s Aiden Ramos busted through the line of scrimmage and scored on a 16-yard run with 8:59 left to make it 14-13. With a no-overtime rule in place the East opted to go for two but were stonewalled by the West defense.

The East had one last chance but the kick sailed just wide right.

Three awards were handed out in the game which were named after three late legendary coaches in the San Gabriel Valley – Lou Farrar, Greg Gano and Jim Bonds.

@MattV. I don’t know what’s worse: your unhinged rant against random people on the internet or your atrocious grammar and spelling errors. Read a book.

I hear Luis Marin has been contacted by the Dallas Cowboys, as he’s the type of kicker they prefer.
