South Pas Joins Four-way at Arroyo

South Pas returning quarterback Conor Bednarski

(El Monte) – I got a look at South Pasadena Tuesday at a four way toss at Arroyo along with Arcadia and Los Altos. Don’t worry, I’m not going to go all street rat crazy on you and proclaim the Tigers will win the Rio Hondo and make a deep playoff run.

They have a good returning quarterback and some athletic players that might create some problems but in the Rio it might not be enough.

“They were out here last week too and I thought they looked good,” said Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser. “They have some real good skill players.”

What the Tigers do have is senior quarterback Conor Bednarski who threw for over 1000 yards last year and rushed for close to 200. Bednarski, a big kid who stands 6’3” and weighs 200 pounds, has a big arm as well.

South Pas also returns wide receiver Matt Nelson and running back Patrick Martin. Nelson caught 30 passes a year ago for close to 500 yards averaging over 15 yards a catch.

Arroyo quarterback Steven Rivera played some defense Tuesday. Will he play D in September?

Martin will play on both sides of the ball as he lines up in the secondary as well.

Kevin Figuerora, Mayan Schexnayder and Michael Lind all return on defense. Lind, will plow the way on the offensive line when the Tigers have the ball.

With Bednarski South Pas has a puncher’s chance. But how does it translate in the Rio? Fourth if they can surprise- possibly fifth.

The Tigers open at San Gabriel, and then get Hoover, Glendale, Alhambra and Cathedral in their non league schedule. They begin league play at La Canada on October 15.

Dead Ahead

All four schools at the throw around begin their dead period next week. “I’m getting tired of this stuff,” Singiser said. “I’m ready for some real football.”

“We still need a lot of work,” said Los Altos Coach Jim Arrellanes as he watched his team toss with South Pas. “But it seems like the last week or so we’re just now starting to get a little more dialed in. We’re ready for the break though.”

The dead period will go for three weeks with the teams returning about the middle of August.

Passing Fancy?

What has really been evident this spring/summer are all the passing leagues that take place. I wasn’t sure if it was just me but I never could remember this many passing leagues taking place.

“We never threw this much when I was in high school,” said Arellanes, who played quarterback at El Rancho back in the day. “We would maybe have other teams come to us once in a while and it was a big deal. Everything else was just our team on campus.”

“For us it was three yards and a cloud of dust,” Singiser laughed. “We would go throw with other teams on a college campus maybe once or twice and that was about it.”

Well, they don’t have many four way tosses left to worry about. Now they can start thinking about the real fun stuff. Hell week.
