Pasadena Knocked Out in First Round

(Pasadena) – Michael Martirossian hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to give AGBU/ Canoga Park a 45-44 win over Pasadena Wednesday night in the first round of the CIF SS Division 2A Boys Basketball playoffs.

Desmond Every banked in a three for Pasadena to give the Bulldogs a 44-40 lead forcing an AGBU timeout with 33 seconds left. 

An AGBU basket and a missed Pasadena free throw gave the Titans an opportunity. Martirossian took advantage by nailing the three for the win. Pasadena had one last possession but failed to convert and the AGBU celebration ensued.

The Bulldogs led throughout the game. Fidel Cabrera scored 7 points in the first quarter and Every had 5 for a 15-11 first quarter lead.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter as Pasadena scored just 5 points to AGBU’s 3 and the Bulldogs led 20-14 at the break.

Pasadena still led 34-29 after three quarters. Jason Guyton scored six points in the third and Casey Barrett had five and the Bulldogs maintained a five-point advantage.

Pasadena struggled in the fourth with turnovers and missed shots but still led by four with under a minute left. But the Titans got the big 3 and the last stop and pulled out the win.

For Pasadena Guyton led the team 19 points including two from beyond the arc. Every had 10 and Cabrera finished with 9. 

For AGBU, Avand Dorian took scoring honors with 16 and Matthew Sahrazgiu had 11. Martirossian had just 6 points, all in the fourth quarter including the biggest one of the night to win it. 

Pasadena won the Pacific League with a 13-1 record and finished 19-9 overall and now has to look forward to next year with the early exit. 

AGBU/Canoga Park advances to the second round.

    Letter perfect
    The toughest job when facing AGBU is the game announcer with all the 4-5 syllable last names.

    @ Letter Perfect: That’s a good one; those charter high schools sometimes have pretty long names.

    Next up for AGBU is either DCBA or WXYZ, depending on how the alphabet soup gets stirred.
