Calpreps/Max Preps:Pre Season Power Rankings 2010

"Either conquer or die!"

(Not necessarily OUR power rankings, but you’ve got to value the opinions of others…and these guys do a great job)

Mid Valley Division

1. San Dimas

2. Valley Christian

3. Monrovia

4. Whittier Christian

5. Schurr

6. Arroyo

7. San Gabriel

8. Baldwin Park

9. San Marino

10. Bell Gardens

11. Azusa

12. Maranatha

13. Village Christian

14. Rosemead

15. Covina

16. Alhambra

T17. Temple City/Gladstone

19. Workman

20. L.A. Baptist

Observations of a Local Coach (Preferring to remain anonymous)

A) Almont has 3 teams in the top 10: This means folks are sold on SG and BG.

B) Olympic teams have 2 teams in the top 4: Is this where Torosian got his warnings about the Valley Christian? Number two?

C) Valle Vista, Rio Hondo also have 2 teams in the top 10: San Marino in the top ten is a joke, Temple City in the top 20–NOPE!

D) Montview has NO teams in the top 10: And where is Azusa?

E) Valley Christian is #2! Above Monrovia?: Ā Strength of schedule must have a lot to do with it, but have you seen M-Town’s schedule?

F) La Canada and La Puente are not even in the top 20?: LC belongs in the Top 20, but Workman is?

G) There are 4 Olympic teams in the top 13 and ALL 5 are in the top 20: Village Christian should not be overlooked.

H) There are 4 Almont teams in the top 16: Alhambra is listed way too high.

J) San Marino in the top 10?: Is Kwame Do going to run for 2,000-yards?

K) Schurr may have something to say about being ranked fifth.

Lets see, BG beat Azusa 34-6. BG has their top QB, RB, WR, TE, DL man, Safety comming back. The JV and Freshmen won league. If you know anything about BG you would know they always have a solid OL. Is that enough or do you need more if so tell Joe and the boys to go to BG and check them out.
P.S. Joe leave andy at home. Salesian beat De la salle. for the state title?? How could you even think that.

    Thanks K.

Right you are about the preseason although when you look at it, Whittier and Valley’s non-league schedules are right up there with the toughest in the Mid.

My take on the Village team is based upon my understanding they have several new guys this season who bring serious game to the table. Some might call them “refugees from the Diocese”. Don’t know yet if it is a done deal, but if it plays out it will change the balance of power in the Olympic and add another contender to the D.

    Oso Viejo,

Pretty solid assessment but I do have to correct one thing regarding your “Christians”, you have Village above Whittier and Valley! Yes their QB, RB, and O line return. But all their WR’s and slots are gone…and their defense could not stop ANYONE last year! Whittier put up 41 points, Paraclete put up 35, and Valley put up 34. They also play a weak preseason compared to Whittier and Valley.

They will be solid, they should get an at large bid and they might even win a playoff game. But NO WAY are they better than Whittier, Valley, AND Monrovia!

Talk about your have and have-not Divisions; once you get past the Christians and the Saints, the Spartans and the Cats, the chances of the rest of the Mid-Valley making a deep playoff run really slides. I would be frankly surprised to see anyone outside of the top dozen or so make it out of the first round.

    1. San Dimas: Brings back a lot from 2009′s 13-1 champ. May be the ‘dynasty’ team for this decade

    2. Village Christian: Returns nearly intact a team that played tough with all but Paraclete in last year.

    3. Monrovia: I gots some questions that only time and adversity will answer.

    4. Schurr: Can they do it with Defense? They say they Cantu, we’ll see too.

    5. Whittier Christian: Defenders that look at RB’s like a wolf looks at a lamb chop, plus a good QB.

    6. Arroyo: All there, even a tough game early (Hart) to get ‘em ready for the Christians and Saints.

    7. Valley Christian: Scary, maybe a dangerous pre-season, Tesoro, St Maggies, St Joe, and Mayfair.

    8. Bell Gardens: Returns a pretty good QB, targets and some rushing talent. Defense is suspect.

    9. Baldwin Park: One of the best Defense’s in the Mid needs some help scoring.

    10. Azusa: Best the Montview has, ya gotta love these kids, more stones than Vulcan Materials.

    11. Rosemead: Fear the mead? I’d say, be wary but fear, nah.

    12. Covina: Needs another year but will surprise anyone taking them for granted.

    13. San Marino: Whale of a year in ’09, too bad all the talent graduated.

    14. San Gabriel: He who liveth by the Valdez, better find someone to replace him after he graduates,

    15. Maranatha; Lost too much offense for a school this size to replace in one year.

    16. Wilson: Nobody made out better in the new leagues/divisons than Wilson

    17. Pomona: Teague is amazing, but these guys have issues. I think Coach Rice needs a year.

    18. Alhambra: Mitchell and the QB graduated, Gil retired. Playoffs, barely.

    19. La Canada: OK, really, how many teams can honestly say their scorekeeper works at JPL?

20.Temple City: A team in need of re-leaguing relief

    21. Gladstone: Only on here because that big mascot head thing frightens Montview opponents

    22. La Puente: Kinda like Azusa, only less talent returning

Spartan- We’ll probably be putting together our top 20 for the Southeast and the Mid-Valley Divisions right before the season starts and then post it each week through out the season. We could do it now but it’s so early that there would be too much speculation and unanswered questions. We’d rather wait and then post it on a consistent basis based on the way things play out. We know who we like in each divsion already but again it’s only July. Yes Schurr is one of the teams we rank high…ha ha. Thanks for your input and for reading.

    JJIMENEZ,

No you aren’t going to find that out, it isn’t perfect but is better than nothing. All we are saying is 7on7 shows some of your strengths and some of your weakness. If you see glaring weakness they are going to be their when you put the pads on. The strengths make be cancealled out by other weakness like your line.

find another QB…. What if you have the best QB in the world but a line that cant protect him for sh*t. Are you gonna find that out in a passing league that doesnt rush the QB???

    JJIMENEZ,

What if that quarterback can’t pick apart the other teams defense?

You have to conclude that quarterback is going to have major issues under the lights. So yes you can take something out of 7on7.

Yeah I have no problem with Azusa ahead of Mead. Not saying they can’t beat Azusa but from what I’ve seen in the summer Azusa looks pretty darn good to me. What’s BG have?

  18. K's Gravatar K
    July 29, 2010 - 9:32 am | Permalink

Offensively for teams like Rosemead and SD, passing league don’t mean a whole lot. Although when you are down late in tough game…you aren’t gonna be able to pound the ball, you have to be able to throw.

Defensively, passing league means a lot for everybody. Why? Because Rosemead has to beat Rivera to win the MV league, SG has to beat Cantu to win the Almont, and from what Azusa and Whittier Christian showed at the SGV tourney, you can bet they are going to sling it. Yes, it is high school and most teams are still run first. BUT, times have changed and if you can’t stop a good QB and good WR’s, you will not be successful in the long run.

I disagree. They do mean something. Usually it is combined ingredients. If you do well in passing league and have an O-line should do do well. If you do really bad…and you’re not a running team then you’re done. Also getting timing down and a rapport between receivers and the quarterback. You asked if it meant something. It does, how much, not too sure.

It is amazing to read “Azusa will win the Montview easily”.

It used to be the easiest teams to bag on were Keppel, Hoover and …Azusa. No area coach deserves more ups than Schlerf and crew, that program is on track.

After Temple City dominated them 17-0 in round two a couple years ago, the Aztecs seemed to have shored up many of their exploitable weaknesses. That playoff game has since turned out to be a story of two teams headed in completely different directions.

    July 28, 2010 - 11:54 pm | Permalink

Come on now, really? With no pads, no hitting and no rush on a QB who has all the time to pick you apart? Passing leagues are really all that? Wouldn’t you get more reps just going thru the offense/defense on your own and working on timing, foot work and proper technique. I understand all the hoopla ’cause your competing against a different color shirt but the games are meaningless.

  22. Bonita Alum's Gravatar Bonita Alum
    July 28, 2010 - 11:15 pm | Permalink

If you run like San Dimas…no. For the defense yes because they get reps. But if you’re a passing team like Bonita, Claremont, Mater Dei, Glendora, Upland, and others. Then yes because your receivers get a lot of reps. However, the reps aren’t worth a darn if a team is running a passing league offense and not their standard offense.

I know they were 0-10 last year, and yes im an alum but Mtn.View is looking good. They still got 80 kids out there over 40 on varsity, today they had a hand full of there skill guys run under a 4.8 lowest was a 4.53 and that guys gonna be Views first 1,000 yard rusher.

They have a weak pre-season with Keppel, Bassett, Sierra Vista, and Workman they can pull 5-7 wins out this year. El Monte, Gabby, and South aint that much better if at all. I mean anythings better then 0-10 and they can only get better but there new offense is gonna make things happen at View.

I agree that Maranatha might take some lumps this year as they are a very young team and will have to learn how to play at this competitive level week in and week out. Like another posted though, I think they’ll really make some news in this division in the next year or two.
Bonita Alum–I’m not sure what you’re talking about “Maranatha doing poorly in the Claremont tourney” as they weren’t even in it. They never have been.

Yeah I must confess I didn’t see them (Tesoro) play…but how often do Pac 5 schools play Mid Valley teams! That’s all I am saying. And like I said, I have heard mixed reviews on Maranatha but I know they are well coached and will play tough. Problem is that Valley, Whittier, and Village…all good programs who will be tough for the Minutemen to bang with week in and week out.

Well I’m basing off what I saw from them last season. Yes, South Hills got their keister beat by them. However, Mission Viejo’s 3rd team made them look like a bunch of JVs. Yet the question begs to be asked…was Tesoro looking to schedule down to pad their schedule and Valley was ready to take a check?

As far as Maranatha…I’m looking for them to make noise next year.

Bonita, Tesoro was in the Pac-5 final a couple years ago! They are legit! Now Valley may get smashed by them but if they are competitive that says something.

PP, I don’ t know about about Maranatha (I have heard they are young but athletic) or BG, but I can tell you that Village WILL be good. Their schedule sucks but they almost beat Whittier and Valley lasy year. I saw your boys throw this summer and I do think it is a bit of a down year for the Panthers, won’t matter much in league but I don’t see them as a real threat in the playoffs.

Baldwin Park has some talent but lacks depth and coaching to be at the number 8 spot.

My first time posting here..gotta say I’ve seen a lot of the teams over the last few years.and this summer as well… First off M-town have the best talent..hands down they should be #1. San Dimas is nice but not sure if they still have enough talent to hold off M-town, Schurr will be down without those WR’s, Cantue will have to do more..No more throw a lob up to a 6’3 Wr. vs a 5’6 Db. Valley Christian not sure about that #2 must be a schedule thing. But Whitter Christian has that Worthy kid ,and he is a beast..and there defense was solid at the Arroyo tourny. easy the most solid defense. Not the most athletic but sound. San Marino..lost way to much, Were is Azusa??? 11???They should win the Montview easy. And they were semi-finalist last season. Arroyo is nice..but they seem real up and down this summer..also the Mead..will have a defense just like every year..and a smash mouth running game..except..there Rb, ain’t built like Tre’ from a couple season back. So well see..Baldwin Park is a two man team..be a good two man team..well see if its enough? Covina..they have a good Qb and it stops there..there skills did not impress me at the Arroyo tourny I know they were young last yr. But they are still gonna be young again this year. My Dark horse Wilson that dropped in from the big boys league and took 3rd at Arroyo with out there 2 best players…makes me wonder..shouldn’t they have got some love? Workman..well they lost way to many seniors to be mentioned in the top 20. that must be due to Workman in the playoffs 3 out 4 years.. Alhambra and that wing -T without Piko..ya not gonna happen..So to me the Mid -Valley is wide open, you have your Favorites in M-Town, San Dimas, Whitter Christian, and Schurr, with the Dark horses being Azusa, Baldwin park, San Gabriel, and Wilson…thats my view…good luck to all the teams this season…
