Going Gonzo: Baldwin Park Passing League Tournament

By Alex A. Gonzalez

BALDWIN PARK – The Inglewood sentinels were crowned Champions over Don Lugo Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Park’s first annual 7-on-7 passing tournament, and Ontario Christian linemen took first place in the linemen competition.

The Sentinels made it out of their pool by defeating Muir, La Salle, Southeast, and Santa Fe.

Don Lugo accomplished the same by defeating Baldwin Park, Salesian, Bosco Tech, and Rosemead.

In total, 30 teams participated in Saturday’s festivities across six fields. There were impressive plays and some that made me scratch my head.

Although the season does not start until mid-August, there is still more than enough time for some teams in the San Gabriel Valley to make improvements.

Since there were 30 teams in BP’s tournament, I have ten things that impressed me the most.

  1. Inglewood will not be tested until they reach the postseason.
  2. Don Lugo continues its impressive momentum in back-to-back passing league tournaments.
  3. Mark Keppel is making another appearance in a 7-on-7 passing league tournament.
  4. Muir is ready for the season to start and make another run at a CIF title.
  5. Ontario Christian linemen showed the San Gabriel Valley why they won the linemen competition.
  6. Bosco Tech’s defense showed me they do not want to go winless like last season.
  7. La Salle’s air raid offense could be one of the best in the area.
  8. First time seeing Rosemead this summer. Solid on defense, but the offense could use a little more work.
  9. Downey may have lost key players from last year’s team, but the Vikings have reloaded and are ready to go back-to-back in the postseason.
  10. Baldwin Park high school was the first passing league tournament I attended that accepted Apple Pay at the snack bar.

    @Area,
    Right on man.
There are teams that go 2-8 but wouldn’t even have a program if it weren’t for their coaching.
There are teams that that scrape out a 5-5 season and have an early exit in the playoffs who would be 2-8 without their coaching.
AND their our teams that go 8-2 with some good playoff runs because of recruiting that have bad culture and lose games because of poor coaching.

Anytime there is a massive turnaround in a football program, either good or bad, you have to raise your eyebrows.

If a team is terrible to average for years (ala Inglewood, Pasadena, and Sierra Vista), then you have to ask yourself if it’s the program or if it’s the recruiting?

If a team is very good for years and then they completely drop, you have to ask yourself if it’s the new coach, the old coach encouraging kids to leave, or an administrative problem.

No you are not what your record says, that’s what dummies who love eating bs think, some coaches squeeze all talent out of neighborhood kids, some go out and get talent from all over the place, difference between a coach and a recruiter, no Inglewood doesn’t have only Inglewood kids, anyone saying that is foolish.

@airattack not sure what you referring to if a kid is going back to his home school is that considered a transfer? Because the kids transferring to Inglewood are Inglewood kids who have gone to schools outside their district and coming back because of what milvon James is doing. If not for him they would be at Inglewood. At the end of the day you are what your record says and James record at Inglewood speaks for itself

“James has built a solid program…” Hahahaha. You are kidding right?! Like some of our programs in the SGV are now working under a “if you can’t coach, get transfers” Guy can’t coach or build a program without pages and pages of transfers.

Most unorganized tournament I have ever seen! Games were pushed back a hour playoffs starting 2 hours late and the poster was literally written by one of the HS players. Smh

Milvon James has built a solid program again did it at Hawkins now at Inglewood. Produces D1 talent interesting to see if one of these schools with resources gives him a shot because what he has done with minimal resources is phenomenal

I’m surprised they didn’t ask for the pink slip of your car until Apple had cleared payment for parking.
