- Joe Collier, the architect of the famed Denver Broncos famed “Orange Crush” defense, passed away Monday at the age of 91.
10) So glad that Collier got to see the centerpiece of that awesome Orange Crush defense , Randy Gradishar , make the HOF this spring. The great Tom Jackson and Lyle Alzado also prominent performers .
The defense was innovative , 3-4 principles….more versatile linebackers to deal with the modernizing passing game that Bill Wash brought to Bengals in late 70s and infiltrated the league.
Gradishar was called the best defensive player I ever coached by Woody Hayes and Collier used his combination of toughness, size and quickness to build defense around . A true old school DC. AFC Champions in 77 , win over Raiders in championship game was a classic .That defense carried a Vraig Morton led offense into the Super Bowl
