Blair playoffs? HC Gary Parks could make an argument.

T-Minus-36 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Forty year old quarterback, history of the big pick in big games, and a lollygagger to boot…Yes, I say punt! I would rather start fresh, first and ten with Tavaris Jackson.

For some reason the wait from today until Sunday and the Hall of Fame game seems longer than the wait from the Super Bowl to today…Yet the prep season feels like it has never ended.

Word from Santa Fe, word directly from Chiefs HC Jack Mahlstede is he expects to compete for the Del Rio League title.

Next Add SF: The quarterback apparently isn’t settled between Christian Mahlstede and Justin Rincon. Both are six feet. Rincon is a senior. Mahlstede is the HC’s grandson.

How times have changed…Five years ago roughly 17 to 18 teams, now in either the Mid-Valley or Southeast division, played a zero week contest…This season the number is closer to 38…

Yes, I did think the Cal Preps/MaxPreps power rankings seemed a little light. The teams that intrigue me are the ones that on paper should be down because of graduation, but are still ranked high…aka; dangerous.

Diamond Ranch’s Roddy Layton and Cal’s Jim Arnold…Folks believe in these guys so it should be interesting…That Condor roster was blown up, I’m really anxious to see what the man high above in the cherry picker is going to do. I like Arnold’s quarterback Adam Contreras.

One more time with Cal…In week two of Del Rio League play Cal matches up against Whittier… The Cards have been looking from the outside in, in the Del Rio for a long time…A win over the Condors, coupled with a win the previous week over Pioneer, could put them in pretty good shape.

Then again a lot is going to be learned about Cal when they open league against Santa Fe.

Last Add SF: Workman/USC alum Norberto Garrido has joined Mahlstede’s staff and will be, of course, coaching the O-Line.

Last Add Reputation: I would argue Azusa’s Joe Scherf for this as well…After 2008 the Aztecs were supposed to be dead…After a semifinal run last December…nope…In fact all they’ve done, according to those/us, watching from the outside is have a terrific spring and summer…Give Scherf and staff credit.

Digging through the archives found an old poll we threw up where voters (72 of them) agreed by a 69-31 percent margin that a player should be allowed to transfer schools if the program is in disarray.

Last Add Retirement: Brett Favre and Gil Ruedaflores are now tied with most retirments in a career; 39.

No truth to the rumor the Minnesota Vikings have contacted Rosemead HC Matt Koffler to be their starting quarterback this season.

Speaking of Rosemead…folks are talking about their lack of speed…That will be put to the test when they play San Gabriel in Week Three…Now SG is hardly Muir, but the Mats do have some guys that can stretch the field. The following week Mead DC Marc Paramo will get the pleasure of tracking down not only Rowland’s Michael Ball but Leonardo Freeman as well.

Week Five they get TC and everything should be back to normal…

Under the radar in the Rio Hondo…Blair running back Xavier Hicks (great name) had some nice moments in 2009 and will have the benefit of running behind the big dude, Donell Wilson…And that Could be enough for a wide open third spot in the RHL.

Third spot, because I believe La Canada will take the number two position and avoid any drama in qualifying for the playoffs in 2010.

“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.

Stay thirsty my friends…
