Chino Off and Running in League, 38-25

(Covina) – Diego Ogata ran for 153 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score to lead Chino to a 38-25 win over Covina in the Sierra League opener.

Ogata scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter to cap a 61-yard drive. That put the Cowboys up 38-25 and spelled an end to Covina’s hopes.

The Colts tried to move the ball down the field quickly but Jake Duronslet was intercepted with 13 seconds remaining.

Covina was up 10-7 at halftime. The Colts scored first marching 79 yards on seven plays with Joseph Rangel hitting paydirt on a 24-yard touchdown run with just 12 seconds left in the first quarter.

Chino responded quickly. Nathan Blanco got loose for a 66-yard run down to the Covina 12-yard line and two plays later Blanco slammed in from the one-yard line to tie it at 7 early in the second quarter.

Chino Quarterback Diego Ogata ran for three scores and threw for one.

Matthew Gutierrez booted a 27-yard field goal later in the quarter to give the Colts a 10-7 lead.

The Colts had a golden opportunity to extend the lead late in the second quarter as they moved the ball down to the Chino six-yard line but Duronslet was intercepted in the endzone by Aiden Estrada.

The two teams then began exchanging touchdowns in the second half. Ogata capped a 53-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to give the Cowboys their first lead at 14-10. But Covina answered quickly needing just four plays to go 80 yards. Joaquin Barragan went in from eight yards out to put Covina back up 17-14.

Chino then took control scoring the next two touchdowns. Ogata connected with a wide-open Sebastian Alvarado who outran the Covina secondary for a 72-yard touchdown.

Then after Chino forced Covina to punt Ogata picked up his second rushing touchdown of the night with a 12-yard run to put the Cowboys up 28-17 with 11:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Two minutes later Barragan bulled into the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown. He then also ran in the two-point conversion to put Covina within three at 28-25.

Brody Quinzon kicked a 33-yard field goal with just over six minutes left to make it 31-25.

Covina was stopped on fourth down on its own 39-yard line and that led to Ogata’s final score to end it.

Ogata also completed 4 of 10 for 117 yards and a touchdown to go along with his rushing totals. He accounted for four Chino scores on the night. Blanco had 158 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Duronslet completed 24 of 35 for 336 yards and no touchdowns for Covina. He was hurt by the two interceptions. Abraham Perez had a big night for Covina with nine catches for 156 yards but the Colts came up short.

Chino improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Sierra League. Covina fell to 6-2 and 0-1.
