Sorry to hear this story from all perspectives, hoping the young man is feeling better and you guys roll CO. It’s a different game now , and not sure if Summit player was head-hunting or just solid tacking …..let’s see #3 back in action soon !

Covina will be without #3 Abraham Perez he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance just before halftime with a concussion and neck injury I hope he is ok. He was hit in the head really bad by a Summit safety. It was deemed targeting and the player was tossed from the game. What a big blow for Covina he is a very good two-way player. Now when a player gets a concussion he is out 10 days. Rest up and we hope he will be back for the Semi-Finals.

Rio Hondo Prep just banged heads with an OC team that was far bigger than themselves and beat them 28 to 26. I will note that this team fields a team with only about 45 boys in the entire school grades 9 thru 12 and does it without a bunch transfers like many public and private schools for that matter.

BA getting clobbered by a middle seeded team means BA slipping to a D3, 4 team if that. Top guys going to RC. Hagerty’s great pep talks can only go so far. The SGV has no power teams right now. The SF’s, BA’s and Damiens are finesse type teams. They cant bang heads. When the OC played MVS in the 1st round it was 7-1 with Warren the only winner and that was by 1 point. SGV relegated to D12-14 and hope they don’t have to play any OC teams

I get your point , but you lost some of the “zing” at the end . Charter Oak was 2-8 , third in a four team league thus not an automatic qualifier; there two wins are against non playoff teams . Yet they are in and on to second round . Why ? There were other .500 and above teams in left out
There are some good aspects to the new system , but creating Divisions after the end of season invites questions of propriety regarding both CIF and coaching motivation.

I have no drawbacks about a or any upper echelon programs in the sgv getting into the gauntlet with a questionable record……that’s the reward from the football gods for vigorous scheduling year in year out. Not for pop tart, tanking, beta schedules.

    @ Bottom Line and @Anonymous,

One other point I forgot to make, it that the new system penalizes teams that strive for excellence in the regular season. For example, last year Charter Oak goes 10-0 winning league outright and gets “rewarded” with a road game to Yorba Linda who is 10-0. Meanwhile, also last year as an example, Campbell Hall takes 3rd place in league out of a 4 team league and gets rewarded with a home game in division 11 as an at large while the 2nd place team gets a road game in division 10.
Contrast that with this year, and Charter Oak goes something like 3-7 takes first place in league and is an automatic qualifier.
    Again, go figure.
    The system needs tweeked.

This lack of turnout and participation is a result of school culture and administration priorities and choices . The school is responsible ; Keppel
is happy to be a basketball school , but the product they put out in the football field is embarrassing , especially since it’s been this way for twenty years !

First consideration is school size. OK. What division should a school with 2200 students be in. They should be in a pretty competitive division, yet Keppel can barely get 20 kids out in their whole program and they have well over 2000 kids. So school size is out!!!!

Anytime you have humans engaged in any endeavor, there is corruption. It happens in sports, politics, marriage and the job market. I’m saying that all things considered, the new system beats the old by a mile. I’m making the assumption that in the playoffs, nobody “tanks’…everybody plays their A-game, and look at the results: last night’s games were GREAT!

    @Bottom Line,
The new system is seriously flawed and those flaws need to be addressed with a human element that takes those flaws into account. For example, it has opened the flood gates for coaches to entertain the idea of purposefully tanking in the regular season to drop ranking lowering their potential playoff divisions. It encourages transfers as you see teams with kids that become eligible right as league starts and they automatically qualify for playoff do to league standings. That breeds the very elements and environments that corruption can flourish in.
Most of all, it does not take into account the two most impactful pieces of the puzzle.
First, school size. The natural statistical fact that larger schools will by their very nature have more kids to field a team (simple math).
Second, private versus public school. California is like the only state in the country that makes no distinction between the two and has them playing against eachother (ex: 2 years ago, St. Francis versus Long Beach poly).
Fix the problems CIF. You can still use the ranking system to help seperate teams, while at the same time taking into account a small versus large school status both for public and private schools.
This is an easy fix and makes reasonable and logical sense.
The real question is, does @CIF have the character and common sense to make the right choice?
    Time will tell….

If they use this system for playoffs why not make leagues based on the same ratings for next year. Only slight exception would be distance and would cause for adjustments. Easily done. Equal amount of teams in each league. Be great.

In division 2, Servite (power ranking 58.8) hosts LB Poly (60.3)…..in division 3, Warren (45.6) hosts Oak Hills (44.2)…..in division 4, Trabuco Hills (35.4) hosts La Serna (42.9)…..and in division 12, Santa Fe (-6.3) hosts Arrowhead Christian (-7.5).

As you can see, the power ratings are all within a few points of each other, except in the case of La Serna, which probably should have been put into division 3, but will have an easier ride through the postseason, probably because some rich guy wanted it that way.
