East Blanks West in SGV Bowl

By Alex A. Gonzalez

Covina: The best of the best in San Gabriel Valley took center stage Saturday night at Covina District Field in the second annual SGV Bowl, and this year, the East All-Stars showed who was better of the two with a 34-0 blowout win over the West.

Bishop Amat’s Richie Munoz and La Serna’s CJ Ceron both threw two touchdown passes, and Glendora’s Eric Najarro added one in the one-sided victory.

From the start, the game plan for the East, whom Damien head coach Matt Bechtel led, was to score quickly and often, as they only needed one play to get the scoring onslaught started.

Najarro took the first snap and launched a 69-yard bomb at Ayden Gutierrez, who took it to the house for the score. The team then optioned to go for two points following the score, and once Northview’s Dwayne Thompson hauled in Najarro’s pass, the East was up 8-0 after two plays.

Once the West took the field for their first possession, their time on the field was shorter than the touchdown play, which only took 19 seconds off the game clock. Muir’s Brandon Valencia completed two passes for nine yards, and on fourth and short, the offense failed to convert on fourth down, giving the East their second possession at the West 39-yard line.

Ceron, who was part of the State Champion team at La Serna, took the snaps for the East on the second possession, and he was able to lead his unit down the field for the game’s second touchdown of the night.

His 15-yard pass to Diamond Bar’s Kai Jenkins got the offense within the red zone. Two plays after Covina’s Joseph Rangel’s carries of two and three yards, Ceron took the snap, rolled out of the pocket, and found Glendora’s tight end Kareem Esmili for the eight-yard pitch and catch. After the two-point try failed, the East held a 14-0 advantage.

After a quick three and out by the West offense, It was Munoz’s turn to lead the offense for the East for their third touchdown. The Amat quarterback only needed five plays to drive down the field, which ended when he connected with Thompson for the nine-yard touchdown pass.

The East then compiled a drive with more than four plays. Monrovia running back Davonte Jones and Valencia took turns carrying the ball down the field, setting them up within the West’s 25-yard line. However, their drive was cut short when Temple City quarterback Jake Jones’ pass was intercepted by Glendora’s Jacob Monroe, who reversed the field to set up his team on the East 25-yard line with less than four minutes left in the second quarter.

The East did not have a chance to score their fourth touchdown of the night because after Azusa wideout Anthony Del Toro’s catch to set up his team on the 12-yard line, he went down with a leg injury, and both teams agreed to send the game into halftime once Del Toro was carted off the sideline.

Rapper 310babii performed the halftime show for the SGV Bowl, and once the festivities ended to start the second half, a running clock was instituted to end the game.

Ceron’s pass to Covina’s Adrian Rachal from 20 yards out put the East up 26-0 with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter. Then Munoz added his second-night touchdown when he connected with Diamond Bar’s Blaine Magee for the game’s final touchdown. And after another successful 2-point try by the East, the final score tallied 34-0.

No one with a real scholarship would waste time on this and no one earned any kind of scholarship from this.

There are multiple all star games now. One is a little more traditional then this one. If you don’t like it don’t go and support the other one instead of complaining like boomers. It was a packed house btw. Also west beat the east last year, so despite the score the series is 1-1. I hear at the other all star game coming up there going to have Michael McDonald do the half time show so buy your tickets now.

What I saw was a bunch of undisciplined coaches and undisciplined players that no way would I want coaching or playing for me. I’m gonna offer a scholarship to a uncontrolable player? Believe me character and leadership counts. Videos like this count. Recruiters study this stuff..A blow out is a blow out but players and coaches have to keep competing instead of dancing and playing grab DELETED. This is exactly why colleges are offering scholorships to players in the portal rather than investing in SVG clowns.

A running clock for the whole second half seems to be cheating the fans and depriving the players of more time to impress any recruiter in attendance

10 bucks for a rap concert is a great deal if you are a 13 year old girl. But for guys that came to watch the best of the best play football a running clock at the half was a bad deal. No country for old men at this show. Left early.

That was the sorriest all star game I’ve ever seen. Was a blow out before game started. What’s the deal with the half time show. 3 ring circus. Maxie and Matt are good examples of what coaches should not be.
