Wilson Working out

Nice day for a sled ride

San Dimas is the defending CIF Champs. Baldwin Park was runner up to the Saints last year and went 8-2 in the regular season. Covina has Billy Livingston back to run the show and is drawing attention. Thus is the state of the Valle Vista.

Where’s Wilson? Well the Wildcats finished 3-7 a year ago, (0-10 if you believe the CIF), so most people aren’t thinking about Brian Zavala’s squad. Friday morning under a blazing sun, nearly 80 players dressed in Wilson red were sweating through drills consisting of up and downs, pushing sleds and tossing weighted balls.

“We have about 100 total in the program when everybody is out,” said Zavala, who is in his second year. “Everything is going good.”

The Wildcats didn’t lose a lot from last year. Senior Moses Vega returns to be the primary back. He has done a little bit of everything for the Wildcats the last couple of years but this year he can focus on carrying the rock.

Okay here's some water

“He’s is a position that he really should be in. He’s really comfortable there,” Zavala said.

Brandon Schreiman has had a good summer throwing the ball and is slated to be the Wildcats starting quarterback. A skinny kid, Schreiman has worked hard to bulk up.

“He’s put on about 15 or 20 pounds. He’s been hitting the weights,” said Zavala.

Keith Hawk, Josh Nelson and James Paniagua will line up wide and should catch plenty of passes thrown by Schreiman. The offense has plenty of weapons.

The last year or so Wilson has produced some big lineman. This year Joseph Prohoroff, 6’ 1” , 265 paves the way. George Lemus, Joseph Camacho, Andrew Rosales and Josh Servin will join him to form a huge line.

All four are over 240 pounds with Lemus checking in at 260. Most will play on both sides of the line. Gerardo Chavez will see plenty of time up front as well.

Name to keep in mind: Raymond Sierra. He’s only a sophomore and will get on the field at defensive end.

Wilson was in the Miramonte last year so a move to the Valle Vista and the Mid-Valley Division gives them a shot.

“I don’t really mind being under the radar but then again if people are talking about you it means you’re in the mix and that’s what we all want,” Zavala added.

Wilson opens the season with Diamond Bar in week one – September 10. They get Los Altos, La Puente and El Monte before kicking off league play at Covina on October 8.
