T-Minus-16 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Smudge Pot #10: September 25, 1981 at Mt. Sac

San Dimas 13 Bonita 2

Both teams were 1-1 going in and tied at zero till midway through the second quarter when San Dimas linebacker Carl Giles picks of Bonita quarterback Ronnie Miller and returns it 25-yards to paydirt.

Later in the quarter the Saints Al Ochoa intercepts another Miller pass and SD converts it into points when Marcus Glasgow goes 29-yards to Mike Suchanek just eight seconds before the half.

The Bearcats record a safety in the third quarter, but key running by San Dimas’ Kevin Kelly (13-76yds) secures for the Saints another Smudge Pot victory.

The Bearcats get a win and the most notable play is a touchdown that is called back.

In the second quarter Bonita quarterback Jeff Hall scrambles 67-yards for a touchdown, but the score is called back. Hall was waving the ball above his head on his way into the end zone.

The officials move the ball back to the SD 41 from the spot of the foul and Bearcat HC Don Castanon called a timeout to settle his team.

“I told them we don’t play football that way and to just take it to them and play Bonita football,” said Castanon.

On the very next play running back Q.J. Arnold (15-82-TD) goes 41-yards on a draw play for a touchdown. Later in the fourth quarter Hall hits Jon Coulson for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

The Bearcat defense produces multiple sacks by David Brandt and Steve Hillary to preserve the shutout. Bonita produced 206-yards on the ground to just 94 total yards by the Saints.

“Manny out the locker room, through the door, into the parking lot, he is… gone!!!”

I kind of liked the guy…My commitment to baseball these days has come down to this: “Will I change the channel when this guy is up?”

When Manny was at the plate, never. Pedro Guerrero, Albert Pujols, heck I’d even hold the station for Bonds…Bobby as well as Barry…But James Loney, Casey Blake, Russ Martin?….Naaahh…There’s gotta be a Seinfeld on somewhere…

Check the tape Whittier Christian DC Peter Karavedas did his Matt Koffler impression in front of millions last night…

Better still, the right and proper thinking Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla provided The Mid staff with pizza.

As I hoofed the 53 acres of the La Puente campus today in and around McIntosh Field, I got great support from a couple of staffers in Robert and Tim as they raced me around in their golf-carts…If I was wearing one, my hat would be tipped to you guys.

Spent a few minutes watching the J.V. team at Baldwin Park earlier this morning. I thought they looked pretty good, then somebody came alongside me and said; “Not bad for a freshman squad…”

Say what?

“They’re the freshman squad.” Big dudes.

Couldn’t get them to say it live, but it was interesting to have “His Arroyo Baldness” and “The Piper” essentially tell me I’ve been giving too much love to the Valle Vista League.

(I believe they have five teams, with the right things happening, that could be contending for a playoff spot)…

The MVL coaches insisted the Olympic League was the toughest in the Mid-Valley Division.

(Please note ‘Mid-Valley’ with a hyphen)

Had a friend in education tell me today, in the wake of the recent transfers out of South Hills to Bishop Amat and Charter Oak being challenged and denied, its not about the well being of the person, the athlete, or anything else. He said it was about the money. Every student leaving a school takes a certain amount with them from one district to another.

“Joe,” he said. “There’s no money out there. We’re scrapping for everything.”

(I would love to hear some more opinions on this)

Speaking of money…and I understand its coming from other sources…but I’m sick of running into construction at every stop. Everywhere…I’m amazed at how slow work is on football stadiums…especially since football has the potential to MAKE money…

Unless Mt. View is getting ready to host a rodeo, Vikings Stadium isn’t ready.

I knew about the track problem at Rosemead…I’ve been told it SHOULD be taken care of before the season…but I didn’t know the scoreboard had been pulled.

Note to the District: Get the scoreboard back in at Marinelli Stadium, and get the Panthers out of the park.

We are getting reports left and right now about confrontations between park rowdies and Rosemead players…

When people think Rosemead they don’t think basketball and they don’t think Vicki Carr…they think football…Take care of this program.

“Football Rush Week” continues tonight with Cal HC Jim Arnold, Hoover HC Chris Long, and the Schurr pitch and catch tandem of Aaron Cantu and Chris Chiaromonte…

Stay thirsty my friends…
