(West Covina) – Mike Maggiore has stepped down as the head football coach at West Covina he confirmed Thursday. This was his second stint as head coach.
Maggiore coached for 32 years overall and 26 as the head coach at West Covina. In his first stint Maggiore won three CIF titles and compiled a record of 139-14-2 before stepping down after the 2016 season. His three CIF Championships came in 2004, a team which featured future NFL defensive back Walter Thurmond, 2011 over Bonita and a repeat title n 2012 when the Bulldogs racked up 84 points in a rout of La Serna.
Maggiore who played locally at Edgewood before going on to Oregon State, then took three years off before returning to West Covina in 2020. Maggiore guided his troops to an overall mark of 26-25 in his five years. The Bulldogs best year in his second go round was 2023 when the Bulldogs went 11-3 overall and advanced to the CIF Division 10 Championship game where they fell to Torrance. They qualified for the playoffs in 2021 and ’22 as well losing to San Dimas both years in the first round.
In Maggiore’s 26 years at the helm his overall record was record 165-129-2.
“My intent is to stay involved in the football program in any way possible. I’m most proud of my relationships with my players over the years and our part of helping them grow from young men to successful adults,” Maggiore said. “Also being consistently competitive for a long time and making the playoffs for all but four years of my head coaching tenure and doing it with integrity.”
West Covina, now with some big shoes to fill, will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

West Covina’s thrilling CIF championship win over Bonita with the help of a dropped interception is still probably the best HS game I’ve ever seen live.
That win over La Serna, let me just say, they literally could have scored 100+! Those that witnessed it know that I’m not exaggerating. They stepped off the gas practically at halftime and still scored 84!!
One of the greatest DELETED kickings I’ve ever witnessed in person, couldn’t happen to a better group of DELETED
Any word on who got the Mountain View head football job?
From T. Peterson: Nothing yet.
I would put Chuck Leonardis in the same category as Maggiorre. Chuck is tough, likable guy who makes people want to be like him. We absolutely need more coaches like that.
I don’t think he even got one negative comment when he punked La Serna 84-0. Guy was simply well liked. A rarity for HC’s today.
From T. Peterson: 84-21 but who’s counting?
I was glad to see him coaching his boy. Mike is a good man and coach. WC was blessed to have him.
