South Roster to be posted soon.
Memories Yes Steve Ramirez was awesome
Na not really, they have really grown the social media presence especially during high school football season, I don’t agree with their political views but that doesn’t mean I don’t see how much they have grown in the last 2 years with spaces. Cancel culture sucks, you don’t have to be part of it.
Fred, Aram, and Sondy all let their political views get the best of them too often. Too bad, we all just want the sports related break from the real world. All lost credibility during COVID in particular by interjecting personal opinions and shaming those who disagreed. One instance was Fred telling on kids playing in the park comes to mind in West Covina. They had a like thinker on city council then and acted like rats! Thankfully that member was voted the hell out! They all hustled too hard to get people canceled. Chickens came home to roost, and platform has been greatly diminished. Tim has always been about sports. Good for you sir!
@ Memories: Aram could be a little bombastic at times on the SGVN podcasts, but he frequently offered solid takes as well. Steve always came across as well-prepared and thoughtful; he was always the voice of reason in the room.
@ Tim: I recall at least one time in the last year or so that you gave Fred credit for breaking a story. In journalism, it’s called attribution, and that’s a good thing if proper credit is given and the information presented is accurate. It’s also good that we still have some people covering local sports and news; it has almost become a lost art.
Speaking of the newspapers that are now virtually defunct, I particularly miss the big man Aram Tolegian and his twin brother Steve Ramirez. These guys added flavor to the area’s prep coverage, and it’s a damn shame that the internet had to foreclose on their media presence.
Just to be clear on Fred Robledo. I’ve known him for over 20 years. He’s a great guy and does an excellent job covering sports for SGVN Sports. He’s probably the best sports reporter in the San Gabriel Valley, especially for prep sports. This last year I had the opportunity to join Fred, Mark the Shark and a couple of other coaches on “Spaces” on Twitter (X) during the football season on Wednesday nights to talk high school football. We brought in coaches and players and interviewed them about their teams, games, etc. We had a great time and it turned out to be a great show. We plan on working together again on Spaces this season.
But the comment from “Truth” was “Is there anything you guys do not get from Fred Robledo”. And the truth is we don’t get anything from him. Everything on our site is stories we have covered ourselves or we have received the information from coaches, players, ADs or other sources. Everything I posted in my reply is all of ours. None of it was received or taken from Fred.
You know how you will know I got something from Fred? I will give him credit in the opening sentence stating “Fred Robledo from SGVN Sports is reporting that etc, etc…This has happened maybe once or twice that I can recall on stories that I felt we should report based on significance. And I told Fred about it as well. So bottom line if you don’t see us giving him credit we didn’t get it from him. Fred does a great job but I like what we do as well. Hope that clears it up.
@Robert… unfortunately, there are many similar hires in both football and basketball. Administrators are set on
Past head coaching experience and fast talkers find their way in after burning all bridges at past schools with questionable ethics and coaching acumen. Playoff qualification and success is a different animal now with competitive equity model and doesn’t mean what it once did .
@ Tank: Fred Robledo, Jr. is the longtime sports editor for the San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group, which includes the Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and Whittier Daily News.
I don’t subscribe to any of those publications, but if his podcasts from about 15 years ago are still any indication, Robledo has an abrasive style that people can choose to love or hate.
I know it’s not football related but I just saw South Hills HS has a new boys basketball coach in Sam Abebe. I believe that was a BIG Mistake on South Hills part. He from what I have heard and found out has been fired by 2 High Schools due to overthrow the HC and as a Head Coach a John Glenn, one of the players came out to the administration that he had him do the school work for 2 players so they cam be eligible to play so they could go to playoffs. I hope South Hills did their background check on him because it doesn’t seem like they did especially if he had a player do the school work so the other 2 can be eligible. Is that the type of Coach you want to lead your program. That’s just crazy.
Who’s Fred Robledo?
That is a fantastic reply Mr. Peterson! Keep up the great work!
Is there anything you guys do not get from Fred Robledo at SGV Tribune?!
