(Downey) – Sierra Canyon struck early and often in a 49-7 rout of Downey Friday night at Allen Layne Stadium. The Trailblazers led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. They extended it to 42-7 at halftime and coasted the rest of the way on a running clock.

After a short kick to open the game Sierra Canyon immediately took advantage needing just five plays to go 48 yards. Laird Finkel hit De’Markus Barnes on a 23-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.

After a Downey punt it was Barnes again for Sierra Canyon. He took a pass from Laird and outran the Downey secondary for a 64-yard score for a two-touchdown lead.

Downey responded by moving the ball down to the Sierra Canyon 11-yard line. Oscar Rios hit Gavin Ingram over the middle on the next play to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately for the Viking faithful that was the last time Downey scored.

Sierra Canyon scored the next 35 points. Myles Baker broke off a 54-yard touchdown run with 1:33 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter Jerod Terry Jr. came up with another explosive play as he raced right through the Downey defense for a 40-yard touchdown. Three Minutes later Jaxsen Stokes got loose for a 25-yard touchdown and it was 35-7.

With just 26 seconds left in the first half Stokes scored again from 15 yards out to make it 42-7 with a whole second half yet to play.

It went quickly though as Downey agreed to a running clock in the second half. The Trailblazers scored one more time as the defense got into the act. Barnes, who else? stepped in front of a Rios pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown for the final score of the night.

For Sierra Canyon Finkel threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns- all in the first half. Barnes had four receptions for 103 yards and two scores and the pick six on defense. Stokes had 13 carries for 111 yards and a score.

For Downey Ingram had 38 yards rushing and the touchdown receiving but it was a tough night overall of the Viking offense.

Sierra Canyon improved to 4-0 with the victory while Downey fell to 3-1.
