@Boom
Thanks for the info. Arellanes was a year younger than me. He was good. Back then I remember El Rancho had a DE Anthony Cruz (6-4 235) play at UTEP and OT Matt Hicks (6’5 285) play at Washington also around that time.
Anonymou you may be correct on wuhsd having open enrollment within borders, but so do tens of other districts doing exatly the same exact thing…This district is not very different than most districts because players are moving all around from even many miles away to play for the teams they desire to play for. Open enrollment is the commonality according to cif rulings which redid rules in 2012 the last time. yes la serna definitely always getting student athletes and most are higher quality than regular players at cal, santa fe , pioneer, ehittier etc. i agree with you on this, but ‘build it and they will come to the winner for very good reasons like winning championships , earning scholarships (very difficult to earn a running back or qb scholarship at schools with a terrible O line or Dline right?) Or below average coaching staffs, etc. I do not blame the quality players for moving to different schools for this reason do you? Take La Habra when winning ??ten league championships in a row/ winning a few cif championships. They got players from a huge diameter of miles
He was the DRL MVP and WDN player of the year in 2014. He actually started at QB for NAIA Concordia Nebraska, not D1 though. The last D1 FBS guy would’ve been Moe Vasquez playing at Colorado State a few years ago, AJ Toscano started at QB for Charleston Southern a D1 FCS school around 15 years ago. In the 90s Jim Arellanes was QB for Fresno State and the made the Seattle Seahawks roster and was the World Bowl mvp for the Rhein Fire around 1998-99. El Rancho doesn’t get many kids with D1 size or talent, they get kids who are typically undersized and squeeze every ounce of talent from them.
@Who is that?
I’m sure I would have heard of him if he played in college.
But that’s why I haven’t heard of him.
Who is El Rancho’s last Div 1 NCAA FBS FB
player anyway? Just curious.
You La Serna people sure give El Rancho a ton of attention.
Ha, you know exactly who he is and you know you can’t stand what he did to y’all.
@Running away to Mark Keppel’s league
Never heard of the Pereeaia guy, hopefully he played in the 60’s when El Rancho was good at football, so he didnt have to play Division 13 like present day El Rancho Blue Turf Smurf edition.
El Rancho being scared to play in the new 20 team league is a smart move, you definitely should be able to compete with Keppel, Alhambra, & Montebello, but Bell Gardens will still own you.
So new league, but you will still have a LANCER Daddy telling you to stop crying about district admin, or open enrollment, or the refs, or injuries, or every single little thing that the ER Crowd bitches about and just get better at football.
That must’ve been before Andrew Perea lit up La Serna for almost 500 yards. LS realized they needed to go buy kids from Fontana, Montebello, Hacienda Heights, La Puente, you name it, because they knew the actual friendly hills kids would fold like an accordion.

Thank you West Covina. That Title game beatdown was the best thing to ever happen to LS. That game taught LS, who was only the 3rd place team from the Del Rio that year, that they had to get way better to compete for a title.
Within In a year, they were already better than West Covina , as the turning point for the program happened when LS got sweet revenge in the CIF Semifinals despite falling behind 14-0 in the 2nd Qtr, LS flipped the script on WCov, annihilating them 35-3 the rest of the game and crushing WC’s dream of a 3rd straight CIF Title.
Then came the 4th down walk-off TD pass by Frankie Palmer to win CIF in double OT against Norwalk and future NFL 1st round pick Rashaad Penny.
You know the rest…..
2 CIF Titles & 1 State Championship in 2023
16 Straight winning seasons
Making 10 CIF Semifinals &
7 CIF Finals in the last 14 playoff seasons.
33 playoff wins.
Winning 8 DRL titles in a row & 11 of 12,
and a current 34 game league winning streak!
It all started with the West Covina blow out & then kicking WCovina’s DELETED the very next year. Unfortunately it seems WCov fell off a cliff after that, has anybody heard from or seen West Covina lately?
Haven’t seen a successful program like West Covina vanish that fast since El Rancho after the 1960’s.
Sports Man,
You are wrong. WUHSD and CIF are not the same entity. They have an open enrollment school district which means if you live in the boundaries of any of the 5 schools in the district, you can go wherever you want. This is not their previous policy. Entirely different than CIF. CIF does not set school attendance boundaries, school districts do.
Since La Serna is in the most desirable area of the WUHSD, they have taken kids from Piomeer and Santa Fe with ease. Then the more it went along, they got kids from Cal and Whittier and have now extended to it as far west as Montebello and as far east as Fullerton and as far south as La Mirada, and as far north as Hacienda Heights. Hence, the all star team you see now.
will anonymous answer my question that i again challenges his credibility? i suggested that the whittier union hs district had nothing to do with changing the rulings on eligibility boudaaries! CIF committee did the realigning of boundaries for transferring athletes from one school to another;; the last changes occurred in 2012! It was not whittier school district that changed boundaries for all districts so La serna could accept all the best athletes! ” No clue you know who” is my recent name for Anonymous . I wonder if he ever played an important role in a varsity sport in high school
I stand corrected, 84-21
LOL Anonymous? was it the school districts or the CIF Southern section committee ‘ who changed the ruling?
CAN PETERSON HELP HIM WITH THE TRUTH
Never seen a CIF Championship game being over 1 minute into the game until we bulldozed the lanceritos.
You are correct it was 84-21 and really could have and should have been 150-21 if West Covina would have keep my nephew Chris Solomon in the 2nd half. Btw put #2 on El Rancho like it was supposed to happen and LS woulda been beat.
The score on that LS-WC title game was 84-21. Many say it was punishment for playing the game in that God-awful old stadium, but one thing’s for sure: it has stood the test of time as one of the most fearsome beat-downs in championship history. Giving the Devil his due, I admit the LS title tilt with Norwalk over at Cal State Fullerton was amazing, or just plain lucky, depending on your perspective.
The pillaging started the minute Coach LaVigne hung up his whistle, right at the start of Beltran’s tenure. It was not just in football. At one point, even the La Serna girls’ Cross Country top 5 runners were from each of the 5 schools. Open Enrollment made this possible. So if you want to attach a date to it, it was definitely before the 81-12 Championship loss. By the way, those that were in attendance could tell you West Covina, without a doubt, could have scored well north of 100 points! They started to let up by the end of the 3rd quarter. It was THAT BAD!!!!!
Was that the year the wuhsd district decided to open up the school boundaries and let La Serna pillage Santa Fe, Cal, Pioneer, Whittier and any surrounding schools? Or was it the 81-12 beating that West Covina gave them that made them lose their mind to win at all costs even if it meant killing every other program in the district?
We need games like Pioneer at Glenn, because they make games like Upland at Damien seem like the Super Bowl. By the way, how many teams will have to play at SoFi before the novelty wears thin? I hear that the home team doesn’t get any of the money from these things. Sounds fairly insane.
