(Hacienda Heights) – In the 42nd meeting for “The Wheel” Wilson dialed up Josh Morales and the reserve quarterback accounted for five touchdowns in the Wildcats 33-10 victory over rival Los Altos on Friday night.
“It’s not their time,” Wilson HC Brian Zavala exhorted his troops after the game. “This is our time!”
And the moment belonged to the Wildcats and Morales, who was playing for injured starter Brandon Schreiman.
On the third play of the game’s first series Morales converted a third and six by hitting Josh Nelson for a 25-yard gain. On the next play he did even better going 57-yards to Michael Soto and before you could say “ride-a-painted-pony-let-the-spinning-wheel-spin” Wilson was up 7-0.
“I saw the safety roll over on you,” Morales said to his slot receiver George Czarnick. “And I went to him (Soto).”
“No, no,” said Czarnick back to Morales. “That was good stuff.”
By the two minute mark of the second quarter the Wildcats led 20-0 thanks to 19-yard scoring pass from Morales to Moses Vega on a wheel route and an 81-yard long ball to Czarnick, who made catch in traffic, shook off defenders, then sprinted to paydirt.
Los Altos rotated quarterback Shane Virnala in midway through the second quarter to help spark a Conqueror drive. Going 51-yards in nine plays, Virnala dotted the I with a key fourth and six with a 19-yard scramble and then crossed the T with a 12-yard strike to Marcos Tarula to get his team on the board before the break.
Down 20-7 in the third, Los Altos used a short field after Giovanni Martinez’s return took them to the Wilson 39. Three key runs by Scott Tibbs (20-114 yards) carried them to 13, but the drive stalled and Juan Sanchez, recently acquired from the school’s soccer team, banged in a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead to 10.
The Conquerors were able to move the ball on the ground against the Wildcats, and use large stretches of time, but they turned the ball over on downs at midfield after a four minute run. Later in the third they would turn it over on downs after moving the chains and never seriously threatened again. Zavala’s “Darkside” defense got key efforts out of linebackers Gus Garcia and Raymond Sierra. Keith Hawk and Josh Nelson were solid in the secondary.
Morales, who accounted for 394 yards of total offense, scored on a 5-yard run in the third. In the fourth he added a 4-yard touchdown to close the scoring out. Through the air Morales was 12 of 15 for 324 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Rushing he scored twice on 12 attempts for 70-yards.
Los Altos, now 0-3, hosts Ayala next week while Wilson, 1-1, faces La Puente.
