Friday September 25

Montebello (2-3) at Schurr (1-4)

Both teams have had their issues this season. The Oilers beat El Monte handily last week but gave up 47 points to El Rancho and 49 to Garfield earlier this year. Schurr beat Garfield but that was the Spartans only victory. However, they have played a tough schedule falling to Rio Hondo Prep, La Serna, Los Altos and Bonita. It will come down to who can make the most stops. Schurr’s defense will be the difference in the battle for Montebello.

Covina (1-3) at Northview (1-3)

Northview has played a schedule that would make a D-1 College team cringe. The Vikings have lost three straight but when the opponents are La Habra, Torrance and La Serna that’s easy to do. This week they get Covina. The Colts are also 1-3 and are coming off of a 47-22 loss to Nogales. Northview is used to battling with the big boys and should have enough to beat Covina. The Vikes get the win.

St. Francis (2-2) at Charter Oak (4-0)

St. Francis is coming off a big win over a previously unbeaten La Canada team while Charter Oak steam rolled over its fourth straight opponent. However this will be the Chargers’ best opponent so far. St. Francis has Mason Maddox, who was the best player on the field last week. Maddox was dominant at receiver but he can play both sides of the ball. Quarterback Vito Schiada had a big game as well. Charter Oak has yet to be tested. Quarterback Ditch Burbidge and receiver BJ Quiliza are both having big years for the Chargers. If the Golden Knights can strike first it will put the Charter Oak in a position that it’s not used to – having to come from behind. It should be close throughout and could come down to a big play in the fourth quarter. Charter Oak survives.

Servite (2-2) at Damien (3-2)

Damien outscored Salesian 38-21 last week while Servite demolished St. Paul 69-14. Both of Servite’s losses have been to Centennial – one in Corona and one in Arizona. Damien has fallen to Faith Lutheran in Las Vegas and Tustin. Should be a slugfest. Both teams have talented players on both sides of the ball. Damien comes out on top.

El Monte (2-3) at South El Monte (3-2)

Even though now they’re no longer in the same league the two teams can still renew old acquaintances. South El Monte has won three out of four while the Lions are 2-3 and have allowed 97 points in their last two games. The Lions have had trouble stopping people. South shutout Garey 35-0 last week and in two of its four game the Eagles have held their opponent to just single digits. Eagles win the Griffin Bowl.

El Rancho (4-1) at Los Altos (4-0)

This has the potential to be the best game of week. Los Altos is undefeated and hasn’t been tested in any of its first four games. The Conquerors have scored 40 or more points in all four of their wins. El Rancho has lost just once – last week to La Mirada in a game the Dons were leading 18-0 before falling by one point. Evenly matched contest between two well coached local teams. Los Altos wins…close.

Temple City (2-3) at Arcadia (3-2)

It’s odd to see these two teams in the same league but that’s exactly where they are now in the newly formed Crest League. Isn’t The Crest a bar in Temple City? Arcadia is much improved from last year having won three of five games this season. Arcadia is coming off of a 47-0 rout of La Puente last week. Quarterback Freddy Bysshe has already thrown for 1,106 yards and 13 touchdowns. Temple City is 2-3 but had a good 34-13 win over Bosco Tech two weeks ago and beat La Puente as well earlier this season 19-14. Arcadia looks like it has too much firepower for the Rams. Temple City may have trouble making stops. Arcadia wins the “Brawl for the Mall”.

Rowland (0-4) at Diamond Bar (1-3)

After going 10-0 in the regular season last year Rowland is still searching for its first win this year. The Raiders stayed with three-time CIF champion Rio Hondo Prep last week before falling 35-21. Diamond Bar won its first game over Grand Terrace but has lost three consecutive games since. The Brahmas take an early lead and hold off the Raiders the rest of the way.
